LaFell Discussion Here.

I have to agree with this 110%. I liked Tate because of what he brang to the table after the catch, but he's not that great in making the catch. He's like Steve Smith after the catch but like Dwayne Jarrett before it. :(

Case in point.

After looking at that clip, he's not that great of an ahlete, just has no quit and a lot of heart. That will only get you so far in the NFL. And yeah, some of 'great cathces' were pin-point throws by Clausen.

It got Steve Smith pretty far (New York Giants). That guy is amazing. But I agree, you draft talent, not overachievement.

Do you guys think LaFell is good enough to let Smitty play underneath this year?

I doubt it, his upsides seem to be him taking over the "moose" role. But I'm getting excited about him the more I learn. What are his downsides? Small hands (lol) and beating the press?

If LaFell can run routes, there is no reason why Smitty can't fit in the slot more often. Comparing him to Moose to run blocking is cool, but as far as speed, it wouldn't be fair.. The guy looks quick (and of course will want to see him play in the NFL) and if he shows his route running is as good as the experts say, then there is no reason Smitty has to be the main guy running the main routes..

If Edwards shows he can catch the ball and run routes, as well as absorb the playbook.. then we potentially could put Smitty in the slot a lot more often...

    • Apparently the extension he signed before the season was also a little weird, as it had a very low signing bonus. So the Jets have a very small dead cap hit despite trading a big contract that was signed just 2 months ago. I guess it was only a $13 million signing bonus, and trading him mid-season means it's something around only a $10 million dead cap hit left to take. This is a huge win for the Jets for a player I've long felt was overrated because of a great nickname and an amazing rookie season that he's then failed to fully live up to since them.  Combine that with everyone knowing the Colts seem more mirage then legit long term contender, that 2027 1st in particular could end up being a really good asset for the Jets.
    • Steichen has the offense operating at a super high efficiency with JT/Pittman/Warren/Downs.  The OL is strong. The D - the front 7 has been sneaky good.  They don't instill much fear but do enough.  Buckner is stil playing at a high level.  It's a good system on both sides of the ball.  Blue chip players now at every position group.   Overall, the NFL is wide open right now. Seahawks, Colts, Patriots, Rams, & Bills are at the top of the mid-season hill - which is just wild Lions, Bucs, Broncos, Chargers* are in contention/okay spots (LAC is losing guys left and right though) Chiefs, Philly still linger, you can never discount. Steelers, 49ers are around as always.
