QB Hindsight

Now that our camp will be full of young talent at the QB position, a new era begins for the Panthers. While we don't know the future of these new faces (and one old, Moore), it's safe to assume that we've got a good stock to more forward with.

However, without knowing your past, it's hard to see clearly towards the future. If Jake Delhomme hadn't blown it last year, maybe Hurney and Fox wouldn't have looked at the QB spot so aggressively this year and created competition at the position.

That being said, these draft picks and Fox's recent comments are 180 degrees in contradiction of his attitude towards QB with Delhomme. For all intents and purposes Delhomme was as close to a Franchise QB you could get, without being called as such. Even after Delhomme's horrible choke in the Arizona Playoff game, he was given a king's ransom of a contract, and after further failure, was hailed as our "best chance to win". It wasn't until a surprise injury, that Moore was given a chance, and showed to everyone Delhomme was the problem all along.

To that end, I'm curious what other Huddlers think.

Do you think Fox stuck with Delhomme too long?

Do you think Fox has more commitment to win or more commitment to players?

Do you think Fox deserves some credit for being loyal to Delhomme?

Do you think Fox has a lack of confidence in Moore?

absolutely

doesn't matter anymore. the guys he was the most loyal to are gone now. whether it was his doing or not doesn't matter. all that matters is that he now has to choose who the best players are to win now so he has a job here or somewhere else after this season.

Do you think Fox deserves some credit for being loyal to Delhomme?

credit for being loyal...yes. credit to being as loyal as he was...no. to much of a good thing.

Do you think Fox has a lack of confidence in Moore?

thats what kept him from starting. is it still there? probably. moore has to work his butt off to keep that confidence, though.

Hopefully that phrase will never be used again.

1. Yes

2. I believe he trust veterans to a fault in his quest too win.

3. No. I think he believed it was his only option because he didn't trust Moore.

4. We will see.

Do you think Fox stuck with Delhomme too long?

i was calling for delhomme to be let go years ago. towards the beginning of his career with us he had a horrible problem throwing the ball too high. he fixed that eventually. some games he would really do horrible. some years he would really do horrible. but, then he would do really great some games and some years. i don't think fox knew when to cut him because he would turn things around out of nowhere. he had to have been one of the most inconsistent football players i've ever seen.

Do you think Fox has more commitment to win or more commitment to players?

i don't think he's committed to players more than winning. they've let a lot of players go, some big names. like i said, i just don't think they knew what to do with delhomme. i would dump anyone that inconsistent, but i can't blame them for not doing it sooner. they would've lost his great production in '08 before the playoff loss. qb is the toughest position to find quality players at. if you have a guy who is on fire half the time, i can see why a coach would keep him even if he's horrible the other half. i wouldn't do it, but i can understand why someone would.

Do you think Fox deserves some credit for being loyal to Delhomme?

no, 'cause i would've dropped him.

Do you think Fox has a lack of confidence in Moore?

i'd have a lack of confidence in him too. he was awful in every preseason game i saw him in. then, out of the blue he dominates at the end of last year. do we have another inconsistent player, or is he finally up to speed? i don't know.

fox has done this for along time, players he likes he gives every chance to succeed or fail. Jake won alot of games for him and was of the best leaders on this team so he held on to long but he doesn't have that option at QB anymore so he has to play the best whether that be moore or clausen

that's someting alot of pro moore supporters seem to miss, during camp he did not even look to be challenging Jake or Mckown for that matter so it makes sense to bring in competition to make him earn the starting job

I don't think I will ever forgive Fox for the Delhomme debacle...

1.) Hells yes. I blame him for not trying to find a franchise QB ever since that Seattle game in 05.

2.) 50/50

3.) No. If anything, he deserves ridicule!

4.) Yes. I don't think Fox completely trust Moore...

I didn't use the "PuntJake" username all last season for no reason!

Not just Fox, but the whole front office stuck with him too long. It was evident he had issues mid season before the meltdown in the playoffs against Arizona. Then, they gave him a monster salary and will pay him millions to play for the Browns this year! What an epic Fail in the handling of one player. They should have moved on before the T.J. surgury in my opinion.

But that era is over and a new one has begun. Fox and the organization has learned a valuable lesson and will not hesitate to make the change if Moore falters. It could come early in the season, or, hopefully, it will come in preseason!

Do you think Fox stuck with Delhomme too long? Yes, we should of addressed the qb situation when we could of had Aaron Rodgers or hell we should of addressed the Qb situation in 2002 when we drafted Peppers. Luckily we found Delhome in 2003, if he never worked out for us then we might of never been a successful team.

Do you think Fox has more commitment to win or more commitment to players? Players obviously, He always chooses experience over talent. You can tell by some of the calls he makes that cost us the game. He is too conservative.

Do you think Fox deserves some credit for being loyal to Delhomme? Credit for making the wrong Choice of course

Do you think Fox has a lack of confidence in Moore? Yes, why would we draft 2 quarterbacks in the draft? If he had so much confidence in Moore then why was he the number 3 quarterback and why did it take so long for him to start. I have came to the conclusion that either we don't have confidence in Moore or we are preparing for the future and creating a back up plan in case Moore was lucky last year and isn't the answer for Qb.

Well, part of me wonders if it was really a "competition" between Jake and Moore to begin with. Smitty's interview on WFNZ today said that this would be the first QB competition in training camp that Moore has really been a part of. That leads me to think Delhomme was always presumed the starter, even after the 2008 playoff game (not a surprise given how much money he was given last offseason).

We tried to by drafting Randy Fasani. However, other than David Garrard in the 4th round, that draft was full of fail. Remember the two guys drafted at #1 and #3? How are they doing now?

Well, I guess I should answer my own questions:

Do you think Fox stuck with Delhomme too long?

Yep.... with some caveats....

1. I don't think the contract made any sense at all. A 1 or 2 year deal should have been all he got. After Arizona, they should have put him on a short leash

2. I think he should have been suspect mid-way through 2008.

3. I think he should have been benched after week 7 of 2009

Do you think Fox has more commitment to win or more commitment to players?

Players. There is a reason my family refers to the Panther's locker room as "Club Fox". Accountability is deferred in lieu of coach's good-ole-boy mentality.

Do you think Fox deserves some credit for being loyal to Delhomme?

None. Zero. You don't reward poor performance. Unless you want to fail.

Do you think Fox has a lack of confidence in Moore?

Either lack of confidence, or perhaps something else... I think Fox has a personal problem with Moore because he showed up Delhomme.

i don't doubt that jake was the starter no matter what , that's what everybody already knows. but i think mckown would have started had he not got hurt before moore got his shot. we need to learn from past mistakes(giving jake franchise treatment) until moore or clausen or whomever proves it on the field
