SI Say Carolina has the #1..

Most Compelling Quarterback situation this season. Makes some good points.

1. Carolina Panthers

Starter: Matt Moore

Challengers: Jimmy Clausen, Tony Pike, Hunter Cantwell

The Upshot: After Moore went 4-1 to end the season in his first real shot at the No. 1 job, the Panthers let Jake Delhomme, A.J. Feeley and Josh McCown walk and handed the job to Moore, the former Oregon State star who stuck in the league after going undrafted in 2007. But the draft threw Carolina's quarterback depth chart in a whole new light because the Panthers went out of character and nabbed both Notre Dame's Clausen (second round) and Cincinnati's Pike (sixth). Clausen is obviously well-positioned to challenge for Moore's job from day one, and don't overlook Pike's potential to get himself noticed with some solid preseason work.

Potential For Change: I like Moore; when he's been given a chance, he has produced during his three years in Carolina. But with Clausen being a first-round talent in the eyes of many, the reality is he's going to get a chance to play at some point as a rookie. And let's not forget, Panthers head coach John Fox is in the final year of his contract, so he's not going to hesitate to make a move if Moore struggles early. The "Clausen to the Rescue'' clamor will be heard in 2010.

I don't agree with this.

Provided Moore plays well and we're winning games, Fox won't put Clausen in -- and it's not just because he's loyal to the vets. If Fox has a good indication in the preseason that Clausen is the real deal, I think he'll play Moore in hopes of tagging and trading him next season.

Again, this is provided Moore plays at a pretty high level.

remember when David Carr was going to compete for the #1 spot at training camp with Delhomme..yeah that was great cause it never happened either..

That's sort of a bad example, considering Delhomme was playing lights out in the first few games of that season before he was injured. Who's to say bringing Carr in wasn't a part of that?

This doesn't necessarily mean Clausen goes in the first time Moore stumbles, but if a game is decided, one way or the other, there's no reason not to put him in and give him some game experience. And since Clausen ran pretty much the same offense at ND, there should be less of a learning curve for him as a rookie.

just to keep perspective... Moore's 4-1 could have been a barely better than average 3-2 if the saints hadn't rested their entire starting lineup at the end of the season.

would you still be saying Moore is a sure starter if he had only gone 3-2.

His win loss stat, the most important stat, is 20% tainted.

just to keep things in perspective, Foxball works against Payton.......we had the Saints by the balls w/ Jake Delhomme at QB last year.

Matt Moore and the offense will roll. D will keep this team down.

No matter what I think we are in a good position. There is never anything bad about having two young and very talented QBs.

I will say that the only edge I give to Moore is experience. I think Clausen's upside is tremendous. I just think that he gets how to play the position.

With our running game I truly believe that the only QB in the league that could struggle would be Delhomme.

If Moore starts, and looking at our first 4 games, Giants, Bucs, Bengals, and Saints, It is quite possible we could go 1-3. obviously if we have a winning record, the point is moot but, if we did start 1-3, could we see Clausen in week 5 against the Bears?

Would 1-3 be "enough"?

    • I enjoyed reading this thread and the usual banter that follows. The only silver lining I can identify right now is we do actually have a couple of young QB's behind him and we do have a nice roster on both sides of the ball built around the most important position. So if the team overall shows some promise but we still falter largely due to a lack of consistent passing output (again) hopefully the decision makers can be free to make the best decision for the team going forward after the conclusion of this upcoming season.
    • I don't really follow the team anymore due to a variety of reasons and consequently have largely stopped posting but I agree that this is a lovely website and community. This forum probably kept me around for years longer than I would've stuck otherwise because of how difficult it was to stop checking multiple times a day. Especially appreciate how lax the moderation tends to be compared to a lot of places, the crew here does a great job. Out of curiousity I decided to try making a new account (solely for testing purposes) to see what exactly is wrong with the sign up process. The issue seems to be that it never sends you an account verification email, thus making it impossible to complete registration. This is likely something to do with the email server upstream, hope it gets fixed. Also, lol
    • Uh oh, Nicole Tepper hugged him. In all seriousness though every time I see more about him my hopes get higher. Smart, great attitude, prototype size and measurables, and athletic. He could be a great one.
