Had a great canoeing fishing trip this weekend

I just got back from taking my scouts canoeing and fishing on the Little Tennessee River outside of Franklin. Had a great time, the weather was decent, and the places we stayed were great. Jerry at the Great Smoky Mountain Fish Camp and Safari set it up. He had a nice setup. I am thinking about going back over Memorial Day to float and fish the river with a few friends and family. A few guys I talked to as we left said they caught 50 fish between the 3 of them. Apparently they can help us non fisherman do well also,

Our boys stayed at a semi-primitive camping area which was perfect for 8 scouts who were loud and excited a lot. We do better by ourselves- that way we don't disturb anyone. We had a good canoe trip, only 2 or 3 swamped canoes (same guys) as they got caught up in fallen trees near the bank. We even found a swing and had to all take our turn shimmying up a moss covered branch to a spot about 15 feet above the river. It was easier to do when I was a child. Back then I worried about the swinging part. Now I wonder if I can even get up there. We practiced reading the water and canoeing some very easy class 1 rapids in a canoe.

If your boys are boy scouts and not cub scouts, I'd highly recommend doing Algonquin Provincial Park. We covered 100 miles in a canoe in 10 days when I was a senior in high school One of the most memorable experiences of my life. Especially seeing a black bear fairly close, lol.

Anyone ever done a canoeing trip on the Cape Fear down to Wilmington? Around the Harnett County area on down. How many dams did you have to port around...how many days did it take...

Somebody-might have been Parks and Rec- used to have an organized canoe trip from Fayetteville to Wilmington. They stopped doing it just about the time I found out. That would kick ass, tho. Just figure out where to camp along the way.

Exactly.

It's one of my bucket list items...if I had one started.

There are several trips you can take on what is called the Northern tier going from Montana and Wyoming into Canada. We will likely get a crew together to do it next year. The thought of black flies and portaging a canoe for miles at a time doesn't thrill me exactly. I would rather do Seabase in the Florida keys. Scuba diving and bone fishing are more my style at this point.

    • I would write “give remmers tight end help” on a yellow sticky note and stuck it in shulas playbook the night before superbowl 50.
    • And don’t worry about Bryce he will be great… Peyton Manning had a horrible rookie year too 😂
    • Nothing wrong with it at all until you start telling others they are bad fans or not fans. But you are the good fan because you never say negative stuff about the team.    I did many years of that type of uninformed fanning because there really was no info and coverage like there is with the internet.    I mean, I used to go to the store and get Street and Smith’s annual football issue. That was about the extent of what you could get if you didn’t live in a big city with sportswriters covering and reporting.  There was no video to look at or replay the games and if you didn’t live in the market you could only rarely see your football team play.    TI have fanned since being a kid in the early 1960s, and as late as 1995 - ‘97 I lived in Atlanta and good luck getting more than 3 or 4 games a year on TV. No radio either. No print coverage outside of an AP recap and box unless they played Atlanta.  People today that have always had the network connection don’t know.    I wasn’t very educated about the Panthers until I finally got internet.
