New starting FB Fiammetta 'a mile ahead' of where he was last year at this time

Serious question: can anyone name a third-string back in the NFL as capable and cheap as Sutton?

They're all over the league these days to be honest. I am not saying that because I am a "Sutton hater", but rather because the level of talent at the HB position in the NFL is so great for the demand that awesome players are littered on team's benches and practice squads. Guys who could bang out 4 to 4.5 yards per carry behind our offensive line aren't ridiculously hard to find to be honest. The line in my opinion should get half the credit for the running attack we have. Probably one of the best tandems of tackles in the league right now for the rushing attack. A fantastic center who is almost positionally perfect, and one of the best and most underrated guards in the game with Wharton.

jason snelling

He made about 150K per year more than Sutton last year. My vote is for Tashard Choice who makes about 75K less than Snelling.

EDIT: Snelling signed his tender and will make a base salary of 1.684 million this year

Someone nailed it on the head, Sutton is like Nick Goings. Nick did a good job as a FB, but I would not have wanted him doing it full time. Until his injuries got the best of him, Nick was a pretty darn good third down back. Agreed on ending the Sutton as a FB nonsense. If they list him as a FB to keep him on the roster a la Goings, then fine, but this guy is clearly a RB with less than blazing speed.

Back on topic...I think Fiammetta will probably do well in the long run, but I think he'll struggle early on. He doesn't have enough experience in the NFL to make him a great FB--yet.

Well said.

I don't care if Fiammetta starts or if it's Rashawn Jackson -- I just want the best man for the job at the position.

It is interesting, though, that we've picked up the top-rated fullback (to some, at least) in the last two drafts.

Yes I noticed that too. Fiammetta was #1 and the draft magazine I had this season had Jackson as the #2 rated Fullback.

I hope Fiammetta really steps up. I remember reading his bio. (sorry dont have actual quote handy) But he was a rock solid pure FB.

Go Panthers

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
