Would You Have Drafted Differently Than The Panthers?

i like the draft except for pike. after getting clausen, i just don't understand the pike pick. he's so raw, and even after putting in all of the work, he's at best 3 string. if we make it to 3rd string QB, our season is pretty much over anyways. cantwell could handle that role easily. you can't say trade bait as we need players who can actually play and contribute rather than picking a guy that we have to put a lot of effort into just for the sake of maybe trading him for someone else a year or 3 down the road.

it just doesn't make sense. we had moore, clausen, cantwell and even edwards as emergency 4th QB, why take pike??? best available DT would have been better.

every single year i want the panthers to do something other than what they do.

i mean it's kinda impossible to accurately predict (except when you know that the team is going to draft jon beason HOLLA)

I still am not crazy about the Edwards pick, and really not crazy about the trade. I would have taken the best DT available after taking Lafell. Beyond that, the DBs picks late and Pike, I would have gone with more depth on the OL (true center) and DL, while taken just one of the DBs.

Too lazy to see who was still there, but I was happy with abot 50% of the draft.

Would have drafted Golden Tate over Jimmy Claussen (the guy that made Jimmy look better than he is) and would have kept next years 2nd instead of wasting it on a project player.

as much as I used to agree with that 100% but for some reason, now im ok with the clausen pick, had we gotten golden tate, we would have had 2 smittys and our game involves a big wr opposite 89 so in the long run clausen makes more sense. dont get me wrong though, tate would have been a great pick up, but behind moore we only had cantwell??? i like r draft

I really like the Edwards pick, he's going to be good. Pike seems like a weird pick, it seems like they have no faith in Cantwell at all. But Pike was really good in college and he's really athletic, I would not be surprised if he started for an NFL team in the future. Hopefully that happens and we can trade him for someone. But still, I definitely wish they got more D-Linemen and DBs late in the draft. I love the first 4 picks. I was jumping up and down when they said "Jimmy Clausen".

    • Here's the thing. You compared him to Jake. Jake was signed to the practice squad out of college. Bryce was the number 1 overall. Their expectations are wildly different and so are their contracts. You can talk all you want about what a player is and where they are now and all this other mumbo jumbo, but Jake never had a 5th year option and we weren't talking about the possibility of a top 5 QB contract extension at the end of his 3rd year. What he was expected to be matters because we invested heavily at a cost of future capital, including a 2nd round pick this year, for him to be that guy. The cost to add Bryce took value from the team. To be worth it, he has to add that value back.  Actually, I don't prefer yards, TDs, or only INTs. All those stats by themselves are misleading which is why I said you have to use a lot of different stats. ADOT - Average depth of target.  Completion %. Pretty obvious until you factor in ADOT. 0-5 has a lot higher C% than 10-15%. Hang time. If a pass is in the air for 4.6 seconds vs 3.1 on a 40 yards throw, that gives a DB a lot of time to correct. Is it a loft or is it a laser.  EPA - Expected points added. A way of measuring QB efficiency on every play.  CPOE - ranking pass completions based on several factors, not just the throw.  There's obviously more, but those are the more common.  Typical stats don't show everything. You need to look all over. Looking at a stat line is lazy. That's why I said, you need to analyze everything. Once you start looking at the numbers you start looking at the player. That's why you follow numbers. They lead you places. You look at what happening when the numbers show you patterns. That's where you start finding the problems that yards, TDs and Ints won't show you.
    • It's not relevant who wins or loses. It's about actually attempting to get better at the position.
    • Thank you. I don't understand how the Bryce stans don't see this. I've never seen a player get more hyped for doing so little. Honestly it's driving me a little insane.
