How do you feel about bands doing covers?

Seeing how one of my band is a cover band?

It's a means to an end. If people would pay us to play originals that would be awesome, but, most folks in this area would rather hear a terrible version of sweet home alabama than a kick ass original tune.

I struggled with this for years, only doing originals and not getting jack for it, which was fine at the time, but now I got a family to feed and my wife is a stay at home mom.

Personally, I like cover bands. But I don't see how you can criticize someone for sampling another song when covering someone else's song requires even less originality.

I like song covers because -- just like sampling -- you get to see how an artist's unique take on another artist's work.

Hell, all creative professions are going to draw something from those before them, whether they be writers, musicians, artists or otherwise. Few things under the sun are really original, but that doesn't mean artists can't put an original spin on established material.

I think it started as far back as MC Hammer. Seems to me, one of his songs, Prince (the little purple guy) did first. Pray, maybe?

Fat Boys did it with Chubby Checker & The Twist

Fat Boys again with Wipe Out

RUN DMC with Aerosmith's Walk This Way

Puff Daddy & Faith with The Police/Sting's Every Breath You Take.

Fuggies ripped off Roberta Flack with Killing me Softly

Who can forget this one? BJ Thomas' Hooked on a Feeling (I guess this was pre- Hip Hop.

Blue Swede version:

I only do cover tunes to pay the bills.

What bugs me about sampling is they claim it as their own material, and waaayy down in the liner notes are credits to the original creators.

Maybe the superstar rappers are hard up for money like me?

First of all I have been to see Zcustoms original music and it is great but do I understand why people like cover tunes. I mean if you are at a bar at 11pm and you are tipsy it is alot easier to get into a song you already know.
