Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry suffered from a chronic brain injury that may have influenced his mental state and behavior before he died last winter, West Virginia University researchers said Monday.

that being said I'm interested to see how long it takes the NFL to actually acknowledge the scope of this issue and address it.

Probably won't. They missed a chance to address depression with Andrews -- and several other players. You get the feeling they don't want to talk about mental disorders, they're still kind of taboo in our society sadly.

well, that and they'll possibly be on the hook for huge lawsuits and increased leverage by the players union. This could be very, very damaging to the game.

This week, findings from Henry's brain examination reverberated through the sports world, raising questions about head injuries and safety in high-contact sports.

Doctors found evidence of brain damage, called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, that has been observed in retired players who've had many concussions. Unlike those older players, Henry was 26 when he died.

CTE is also known as dementia pugilistica, because career boxers who've suffered repeated blows to the head have been known to develop the syndrome. Sudden stops and collisions can cause the brain to slosh inside the skull.

Its effects are mainly neurobehavioral. These symptoms include poor decision-making, behavioral problems, failure at personal and business relationships, use of drugs and alcohol, depression and suicide.

All of those are higher level symptoms (id est, there are more factors to it than just the brain damage). I would think it would be hard to directly link this condition to "failed busienss and personal relationships." Sounds like they are extrapolating this from the research. Either way, I don't doubt that it contributes and is detrimental (obviously), but I don't see how they can so readily link it to such higher-level issues.
