Panthers QB Clausen might blow his chance to start if unsigned before camp

I really hope Clausen signs. As a Notre Dame fan, I saw Brady Quinn destroy his chances of being the #1 QB in Cleveland by holding out his rookie year, and his career has never been the same. As a Clausen fan, I don't want to see him do anything to bring about any more ridiculous negative press. And as a Panthers fan, I want the person who plays QB for this team to have engaged in the most competitive battle possible for the job.

Whether he is in camp or not won't be totally up to him. His agent is the one negotiating, Clausen is largely a spectator. I expect it will go down to the wire and perhaps could linger into training camp if Hurney wants to see who will blink first. They want him in camp as much as he wants to be there so a deal could be done. The various incentives and the signing bonus will be the issue. There are a lot of second rounders and first rounder still unsigned so there is no need to panic..................yet.

And actually he would be foolish to sign just to get into camp. The negotiation isn't about starting this year but in years 2 through 4 when it is possible Moore will be gone if he asks for big money and Richardson decides to keep going cheap. There are a ton of rookies who are unhappy when they start and outplay their contract. It is better to sign a deal that works for everyone in the long term even if it means he is behind by a few days in his rookie camp.

yes, but ryan clark defend him saying he was the best.bayless said he doesnt have the intangibles, wasnt accurate.i guess he didnt watch any notre dame games.

Not having the intangibles could be a legitimate concern...we will see.

But, to say he was not accurate is plain stupid. Clausen may not have the strongest arm in the NFL, but his accuracy was EXTREMELY GOOD at ND.

Don't really understand who started this rumor about Clausen having a weak arm. Its ridiculous. I've never liked him but every Notre Dame game I saw I always commented that he has an NFL arm. He's no Farve but he throws an effin laser when he wants to.

Film...? Predraft analysis? His accuracy diminishes the further he throws it. When people say a weak arm, it means his accuracy throwing it deep versus other QB's that have a "Strong" arm. Think Jeff George and a strong arm, Glanville's run and shoot. Clausen is best at the short to intermediate passes, and more accurate there. Strong arms are also suited best for the play action game. Short to medium are good in a spread or west coast style. From what I have read, they are trying to develop Clausen for a more play action type of game. It will take time, but he will improve.

What QB isn't more accurate at short to medium range passes? I don't remember seeing Sam Bradford complete a lot of 70yd bombs in college either. JaMarcus Russell did though, and he was drafted in to an offense that was taylor made for a deep thrower.

I think that it depends on the type of offense that a team is using as to what type of QB is good for their system. Maybe the Panthers are changing the type of passing game that the have operated under in the past.

Still, the Panthers have said that they are still tying to make their QB's better for the play action game. I still think of Jake to Smith on a deep bomb off of play action. You need a QB that can make that throw for it to work. Heck, I can think of three of MM's eight TD's to Smith from a play action fake.

Being a fighting Irish fan,do you think JC is a better qb than Brady Quinn?

There are so many intangibles that play on how a qb turns out as a pro.

THe speed of the game, reading defenses, the playbook, quick release just to mention a few,That is why teams have so much trouble knowing who will a superstar or a bust.It also depends on the OL,I would not want to be a rookie qb that has a bad OL.This usually turns out bad.
