Armanti Edwards....

In four quarters of play in heavy rain, he didn't drop a punt or fumble. For a rookie's first time on an NFL field, that's pretty good. He's got a ways to go, but that's why there are three more preseason games and practices in between them.

Agreed. He didn't muff any punts and I felt certain he would.

He looks completely lost as a receiver, so if he sees the field any this year it will have to be with a much simplified playbook. He needs to catch the ball out in space (smoke screens) or on quick slants. He absolutely cannot battle defenders for the ball at this point.

Heck, I don't think anyone would have been comfortable out there playing last night, especially one who has so much riding on his shoulders. But, just like everyone else, he has to prove he deserves to be on a team. He didn't play lights out or even near where I'd hoped, but he was far from the most disappointing players on the field last night.

They might want to throw up their hands and shift him to 3rd String QB... no number change and they wouldn't be losing anyone of apparent value.

It's gonna take probably a week or two before Armanti gets his legs back under him. He never had to run anywhere near this much in college, so this is a shock to him physically as well as mentally. So let's all take a deep breath let the preseason play out before we start labeling any rookie as a bust or a pro bowler.

Best case scenario right now would be for the team as a whole and for AE individually would be:

Go into the season with Smitty, Jarrett, Moore, LaFell, Wright, and AE as the WR depth chart... in that order... Jarrett, LaFell, and Wright are your better blocking WRs, so they stay ahead of him in most situations, and Moore will be the starting slot man...

Let AE focus on returns (much like Smitty did his rookie season) and some spot duty on 3 and 4 wide sets... occasionally in a trick formation like the Wildcat or an end around... and that is it...

If we throw too much at him at one time, and run him into the ground from multiple positions, he won't ever grasp any of them to a full capacity... We need to give him time to adapt, get his legs, and get his frame more ready for the tasks at hand...

Then, maybe halfway through the season (or sooner should he show himself capable), work him into more passing sets as the slot man... Let him run some normal routes... Let him run block down the field some...

By the end of the year, he will be in a position to be the player he can be, and the player we need him to be, if we go that route instead of throwing him directly into the fire...

I agree with almost all of this. Only thing is I dont see anything wrong with throwing him the ball early and frequently. It will help him learn quicker and actually learn in real game situations. I'm talking about preseason I dont know if are you were or not.

    • Right, so basically what I said in my first post about this last night. Tepper needs to use that big wallet of his in one of the few ways it can be used in the NFL given the cap.   Give Scourton a bigger signing bonus but not a fully guaranteed deal. Everyone wins in that scenario as if Scourton is smart and hires good money people, he'll take that bigger signing bonus and use it to make more money in the end over the next 4 years than if he just had his fully guaranteed deal and a smaller signing bonus.
    • It is all confusing and layered. SB is the cash you get very soon within weeks or in simple terms, its what you get to sign the paper work. Players and agents can agree on contract but what to "wait" to sign......teams don't like that cause you can "Carlos Boozer" yourself. In order to get that ink dry, while keeping the contract the same, portion it as a bonus to "sign" and get the funds with ________ .   * But Ive seen worded contracts that split the SB or a 20% to a later date. The beans counters can fill in the details about why certain dates are better and save the team money.. Theres tricks to the trade and accounting is full of them.    Ugh another big layer, is SB can be used to manipulate cap and players. Ill try to give a example that makes enough sense. Believe it or not having a owner like Tepper is a cheat code for this. He has cash in hand, where as Mark Davis had problem making pay roll and had to move the team to Vegas....... Tepper can give you 100,000,000 SB right now and the team can spread out the cap hit. Another owner doesn't have or want to give the player 100,000,000 in cash, but offered the same guaranteed contract in roster bonuses fully guaranteed over the next few years........ Which one do you want??? Everyone wants the money now, not before another inflation waves hits in 2 years. So it does 'pay" to have a owner like tepper that's able to have real cash on hand, while it also works GREAT for cap help. Heres a good video, if you can stand coked up pat and mask look-a-like AJ
