Too soon to look at free agents?

Right now I kind of think that Peppers and Gross will both be back, with one under the franchise tag. The defense needs help though, and we don't have a high draft pick. So that leaves Free Agency.

It seems like we've had our best success with free agents when we go out and get middle-tier players who were drafted high but never really made a splash. Right now Shaun Cody looks good, maybe Ron Bartell.

Who do you see out there as likely targets?

Bringing in a mid-tier FA may work for a year but after that 1 year said FA almost always becomes considered an "overpaid player" for us. Think Ken Lucas, think Mike Wahle, think Justin Hartwig. We've had some FA pickups pan out like Harris, but more times than not if its someone we sign to a nice deal, they play hard 1 year, then fizzle out after that.

I agree. That wasn't even an FA pickup, it was a trade, and the best one we've ever made by far. (for a 5th rounder)

Hartwig, Lewis, and Wahle were all upper tier free agents, regarded as among the tops at their position at the time. And you're right--we have a lousy track record when we sign them.

Give me the unknowns--Brentson Buckner, Jeff Mitchell, Jake Delhomme, Ricky Proehl, Damione Lewis, Tyler Brayton, and Keydrick Vincent are all great examples. Their teams may have liked them, but they were willing to let them go without a fight. All of them contributed here, some more than others.

Brayton's my favorite example. Former first round pick, wasn't developed, had lousy coaches (and several of them), etc. Put him in a healthy team environment, give him good coaching, and watch him have a career year.

We have a good director of pro scouting, I wonder what gems they uncover this year. :)

Ricky Proehl was an unknown?

Nice post, 1996 never would have happened either without some good FA pickups. We've had major disasters as well. Sean Gilbert, and the lump of poo from the Falcons with the bad knees, can't think of his name. Of course, sometimes you get a Sam Mills.

Don't forget he who must not be named (the automobile guy).

    • https://nfltraderumors.co/2026-nfl-draft-grades-for-all-32-teams/      Grade: B+ Best Pick: Sam Hecht Biggest Reach (consensus rank): Jackson Kuwatch (NR) It's easy to love what Carolina did. The Panthers traded four times but ended the draft with the same number of selections that they started with and in approximately the same ranges. They did not take a player ahead of the consensus until Kuwatch at No. 227, and it's easy to see how he fell through the cracks playing at Miami of Ohio. He's a high-end athlete, though, and has a chance to develop, which is a fine profile for a seventh-rounder. Freeling and Brazzell also checked the high-end athleticism upside boxes for the Panthers. Carolina let the board come to them in the first round and could have a long-term solution at left tackle, which is a hard position to fill. Brazzell slid because of some maturity concerns as well as the difficulty in projecting receivers from Tennessee's Mickey Mouse offense. At 6-4, 200 pounds and 4.37 in the 40, though, the upside is undeniable. On top of that, the landed three starters on Day 3. Normally that's a high and unrealistic bar, but Hecht and Wheatley were both firmly inside the top 100 on the consensus board and have paths to win starting competitions. Lee fits the scheme well and has some interesting traits as an outside corner. What stopped me from a full-out A grade is not loving the Hunter pick, though he does fill a need to replace DT A'Shawn Robinson. There were prospects at other needs positions I would have been more jazzed about. The Brazzell pick is also an interesting risk for a team that's still in building mode, even coming off an NFC South title. Still, I'm nitpicking
