LaFell stunned by promotion

WR Brandon LaFell was pleasantly surprised. QB Jimmy Clausen was relieved there were no surprises for him.

The Panthers rookies talked a few moments ago about their paths this camp, which have taken different turns.

LaFell said he didn't expect to be running with the starters this soon, but he's also confident he belongs.

"I was real surprised," he said of his promotion for the moment.

The Panthers are still rotating players and looking combinations, but LaFell's been a quick study.

Gantt said he'd have more on LaFell and Clausen in tomorrow's paper

Pat Yasinskas' two cents:

Carolina rookie wide receiver Brandon LaFell said he was surprised to get work with the first team. I’m not the least bit surprised. When I visited Carolina’s camp, the brass said it was only a matter of time until LaFell got that chance and he’ll be the starter opposite Steve Smith unless there’s a major regression. This may or may not mean the end of Dwayne Jarrett’s time in Carolina. He has a chance to stick around as a backup. But the Panthers have given up any illusion of Jarrett ever developing into a regular starter.

I think Pre-Season will show us who will take the #2 spot. This battle is a long way from being over but I think LaFell is progressing well. I also think DJ will not be on the roster come game day. He ether is not smart enough to know his routes or just dose not care. Ether way Wallas Wright and a bunch others deserve his spot more then him.

    • I was playing around with the ESPN playoff predictor and it shows if 49ers and Rams finish with same record, the Rams hold the tiebreaker.
    • This is my thinking as well. Seattle played as good as they could on defense and Panthers still had a chance until those back to back turnovers.  I don't think the Rams played particularly well in their game against us, alot things went our way in order to win.  Someone pointed out the Rams were bad on the east coast road games and Seattle has been the better road team but they just fought a hard contested game against the Panthers, and now they travel to San Fran this week for their biggest game of the season to determine the division and if they are the overall #1 seed in the NFC or will be traveling for the Wildcard weekend.  If they lose they then travel back cross the country to play a team they've just beaten two weeks ago, not saying they won't be favored against the Panthers but the energy of hosting our first playoff game in 10 years along with the get back effect of having just lost to this team could be huge.
    • I don’t know about shadowing and all that, but according to this, whatever we are doing is working
