2nd impressions

This can be the official second impressions page if another hasn't been made... or if anyone wants to make it the official page.

I personally came away from the game a little disappointed. I kind of knew how our defense was going to perform, which is lights out. I thought Beason looked better in his second outing, slip or no slip (regarding the "out-of-position" situation he found himself in up in Baltimore last week). Hardy did get a chance to play a bit against the Jets' ones, but didn't really make any huge plays, however, he did get some good pressure. Everette Brown was the star of the night, by far, on defense. I also thought our starting linebackers as a whole did really well tonight. Dan Connor did great against the run too, which is what he'll mostly be used for. And I'll name off a few guys that I think may have made a good statement to be on this team as far as defense goes: Eric Moore, Brian Witherspoon, and Jordan Pugh.

There was a little bit more of a showing of our offense this time, but still too many penalties. Gotta get rid of those, definitely. I thought Moore looked more poised in the pocket than last week. Minus that interception, he had a decent game. Some guys that elevated their status tonight perhaps: Armanti Edwards (receiving, not returning), Dwayne Jarrett, and Brandon Lafell. I thought they all made some nice grabs. I didn't say Kenneth Moore because he's already on the roster in my opinion, but that's just me.

And the special teams, I just don't know where to begin. Were these guys even getting coached up in camp? Or were they just being shown how to line up? Fumbles, broken coverage, missed tackles, and penalties!!! Those are the negatives, let me give you the positives... John Kasay, Captain Munnerlyn and Jason Baker's leg. He got some nice kicks in tonight, even though one was run back past the spot he kicked it from. Other than that, everything else points to horrible coaching. I'd rather have last seasons special teams. Armanti still struggled a bit (even though I thought he made a nice grab late in the game in receiving). I thought the Cap'n had way better returns and I think he should be the full time punt returner until Armanti can get things under control back there.

Our defense shined, everything else sucked basically. Both Moore and Clausen had some decent throws and a couple of them got dropped. Clausen's pick was a bad throw, Moore's throw wasn't great either, but LaFell didn't even try and go for the ball. Might have been prevented, but who knows.

There were a few bright spots (aside from the defense) but they were few and far between.

Id just like to hear from the Peppers jock sniffers really quick. Since we are doomed without Julius Peppers and all...

Haha, our defensive line is gonna be the strength of our defense this year. Which is just craziness. I was skeptical of Brown at first, but damn he put on a clinic tonight. John Fox is gonna have waves... no... tsunamis goin' after the QB. Can't wait till we make that cut on Eli Manning's head rip back open!

Our D looked great tonight, better than last weeks. It's the offense i'm concerned with. With Steve Smith, we may be a little doomed towards WRs. Double trouble is our foundation & I sure do hope our O-line won't committ so many penalties. As far as special teams, we've made a few improvements...I think. AE may not be ready as a PR yet but he's doing fine @ WR. The only thing i'm really upset with is the Wildcat formation: we haven't tried it at all yet!!

I came away from the game pretty happy. Mistakes are going to happen in preseason. But hell, we went up toe to toe with arguably the best defense in the league and one upped them in every way IMO. Our D could very well be the best in the league this year. That gets us to the playoffs 9/10 times..

Defense will be solid, although I'm still worried about run contain. CBs need catching help.

Put in Money on PR next week until he screws up then go to Witherspoon or someone new.

Oline has missed too many blocks but Gross explained it well in the post game show interview. He said that with only one day preparing for the Jets defense and they were the #1 defense last year for a reason, it will lead to a bad offensive showing. He also stated that it was a good game for them to go to the game film and see what they are lacking in so they can get better.

Goodson caught all three of his targets which leads me to wonder why we aren't using him as a WR because of his speed and agility. This to me would fix our #2 WR problem I think.

Iunno, I just don't think Goodson as a WR would work out. Putting him in as a RB and passing to him a few times a game wouldn't be such a bad idea, especially considering he can break a run pretty easily as well.

Also, both CB "near interceptions" were particularly difficult as the receivers hands touched the ball as well (IIRC).

I couldn't agree more with that. I wonder if the coaches have had him line up as a receiver to see how he does. They might have tried it and maybe Goodson just could not run correct routes, idk really.

I was in the stands so I can't really say much in definite terms.

Edwards did not do well at PR obvious. He didn't really clear out the blockers for the 1st muff, and then he lost the ball the 2nd time. He's either scared of blockers or he just lost the ball. He shouldn't go after it if he can't get under it.

Clausen threw the ball away at good times but once he just panicked after the initial pressure. Really he had given himself some time and he could have tried to make a play. For a rookie that is just fine though. With experience he's going to need to show more confidence.

Goodson doesn't really show any better vision that last year. He didn't look any stronger either. He also looked gassed most of the time.

Williams only needs reps to help the offense out. He's regular season ready. Double Trouble only needs to play to help the offense out.

It's crazy how well the D-line is doing. I really like Meeks and I want him to stay.

Wow, really? That is a totally different perspective than what people have posted so far. Glad you shared it. I hope that it was just your perception though.

He was very far away from me during those plays so I'm not the best one to ask.

Still, you have a much different perception than the few people I've seen post about him in the past few hours. I wasn't really impressed by him when he was in, but he didn't completely disappoint either. I think he is much more useful for passing out of the backfield (not as a WR), and perhaps as a KR.

    • It was in the updated roster thread. All signings and waver pickups are in there.
    • Great move Panthers.  Hope he is proven to take the #2 spot.  "Keep Pounding"🤩
    • this is where the Bryce defense goes off the rails for me.  We all know Bryce isn't a deep ball chunk play QB.  He doesn't have those physical tools and he doesn't play the game w/ that mindset.  It simply is not what he is.  Then you got folks going essentially going, well actually Shaq was a very efficient 3 pt shooter this season.  He shot 50% from behind the arc and Steph Curry was only at 48%.  So yeah, Shaq is a very effective 3 pt shooter.  Don't say he isn't a 3 point shooter.  Meanwhile, Shaq went 1 of 2 on the season and Steph shot 9343924 3s.  Russell Wilson is a deep ball chunk QB.  Baker is. Geno was his comeback season (best in the league that year I think is the correct call).  That's the Canales pass tree. EVERY QB throws deep at some point.  Arguing you can find a good grade when they went deep one week is just that.   No one can argue Bryce plays the game like a young Wilson throwing f you hail marys downfield.   Jake Delhomme fits Canales more than any Carolina Panther QB.  Teddy Bridgewater can grade out efficiently on his deep passes.  That doesn't make him a deep ball chunk QB.  2 totally different convos.    It would be better for everyone IMO if our org accepted what the unicorn was and built a team around that given they invested so much in him.....which is the criticism I started day 1 when they put him in Frank Reich's offense.  He didn't fit that.  He doesn't fit the Canales tree either.    NFL is about fit more than anything and it's what Carolina gets most wrong.  We essentially run offenses we don't have the QB talent for and you can say the same w/ the 3-4 D.  That's the Bryce era.
