Adam Schefter: Panthers could release Delhomme

What we know is that without Jake for most of last year we were 7-9. With him went 12-4. If there is the next best sure thing out there then bring him in here. No one believes Jake will play for more than 2 or 3 years no matter what. But where are they? Sure Ryan and Flacco have done well but they were both first rounders which we don't have right now. And what about Tavaris Jackson, Vince Young, Jamarcus Russell, Trent Edwards, Brady Quinn and a number of big money quarterbacks who have underperformed taking up tens of millions of dollars and done little to nothing. Most of these guys are playing behind veterans like Jake anyway. For that matter Matt Moore has as much potential as most any of them.

And how about guys like Eli Manning, and Ben Roethlesburger who each won a Super bowl in the past few years and this year performing no better than Jake. Pittsburgh is still in the playoffs because of defense not offense. If we had Pittsburgh's defense we would be playing at home this week.

When you find the next best sure thing let me know. Until then Jake is still the best QB on our roster and better than a lot of guys in the league including some of those high priced rookies you guys are always trying to replace Jake with.

We have to have a great running game, good defense, and great special teams just to make up for Jake. Sadly I've seen enough of Matt Moore to know he isn't any better than Jake, and I don't think he ever will be. We all know Jake will be back next year, and barring a miracle we will be one and done in the playoffs again. The injury bug didn't bite us too bad this season, but what about next season? How many more years until Smith loses his speed? How long can we keep Peppers? This is our window guys. Smith and Peppers can't be replaced. They are freaks of nature, and they don't come around often. How long do you want to keep giving Jake chance after chance? It doesn't matter if our running game is great. If the other team thinks Jake is a loser, then they will do just what the Cards did in the next playoffs. They will load up the box and focus on the run. Wouldn't you do that if you were the opposing coach? I'd laugh my ass off and wait for the INTs. I never want to see that again.

So long as we have Jake, this team is '1 and done' imo. The draft won't change anything. This team isn't lacking at any position. Ok I take that back, Lucas and Lewis are fuging horrible. But they are gods at their positions compared to Jake. Jake = '1 and done'. Who here will be thinking SB with Jake starting next season? I mean I'll akways pull for the Panthers, but it's no fun when your QB is the weak link.

Do you really believe half this crap you spew. Every team needs a good running game and special teams to make the offense good. Even Brees went 8-8 due to being one dimensional on offense. And you have seen Matt Moore play a total of 3 games in his career and you already know he can't play. And since this is the only time that Jake went once and done and is still 5-3 in the postseason, you know he will be bad next year. And Davidson will learn nothing from this year.

Congratulations, you must be Nostradamus.

And we all know that one year accurately predicts what the next one will be like. Our 7-9 year in 2002 surely predicted our 11-5 year in 2003 which had direct bearing on going 7-9 in 2004 and so one. No one knows what next year will be like, except for you of course.

But Jake is far from our weakest link. If you had said lack of DTs, pass rush, defensive scheme, shutdown corners, tight ends were areas of concern it would have lent you some credibility.

I hope we do get some more QBs in here and if they can outperform Jake that would be fine with me. After all I want a SB and whoever can get us there is great. I also know that the only quarterback in our franchise history who has gotten us there is Jake. Show me someone else who we can get and will be better and I say bring it on. Until then, it is just wailing and whining!!

Yeah, look what happened when we let Beuerlein go.

I'm a little fuzzy on that, but didn't we let him go to make room for Jeff Lewis?

And wasn't Jeff Lewis the guy that got that white ex-Cowboy wide receiver we picked up get badly injured on bad pass over the middle?

Patrick Crayton?

If you are referring to the white receiver that got injured in a pre-season game that was Patrick Jeffers. And he was a beast.

Yeah, that was the guy. I was thrilled when we got him and sick when he went down.

In a preseason game, too.

Ok but don't get upset if I dig this thread up next season... say around playoff time?

And if we don't make them it will be for the same reason we went once and done- the defense. Unless that changes we won't go anywhere. Ask New Orleans which was a top 5 offensive team in the league how far you get without a defense.

BTW- our offense was 7th in the league in points and 10th in total yards which is the second best totals in our history. Funny thing is we let Beuerlein go shortly after which is the same the thing you want to do with Jake. The year after we did that we went 1-15. Getting rid of Beuerlein was one of the biggest mistakes we made behind not resigning Moose. Dumping Jake would be another.

If you don't learn from history, you live to repeat it.

The team should try to keep him for one more year by reworking his contract while attempting to bring in a first round QB like Stafford from GA. He has a very strong arm and can move around in the pocket well, but will need time to mature in the NFL. The team will never win a Superbowl with Jake at the helm. I am not sure we can win one with the current coaching staff either. We need a true offensive coordinator who is not so predictable with play calling.

Yea it is amazing what having a good coach, who knows how to put together a defense can do.

Which brings us to that 'other' guy.................

Like you would really care why you won the SB, as long as you did.

Jake played terrific, better than both of those guys in his super bowl compared to theirs.

I bet he would take a a lesser performance for a ring any day.

I don't want to get rid of Jake unless we have a better option. I think it's time to start thinking about who we would prefer over Jake, and then try and make it happen. We went 7-9 without Jake. The problem wasn't so much letting Moose go, as it was drafting Colbert and Carter. That is where the Panther's scouting department failed. Beuerlein was good consistant QB, Jake is streaky and wild with the ball. Don't worry I won't end my post with an old saying

You all know as well as I do that Jake's going to be back next year starting. We won't be bringing back Peppers and we'll be using that money to pay Jake. I've been a fan of Delhomme for as long as he has started but I think its time to look elsewhere. I really want to see Matt Moore start. At least give him a shot. We have a great running game so that would take pressure off of him...I just don't believe Jake's worth the money anymore.

Well if they do thats fine, I'll just have satifaction knowing it would be the last dime this franchise ever got from me.

    • lol well that kinda ended up working out in the end, even though I still don't have my jersey yet. Was supposed to ship by tomorrow this time, but just got another email saying it was delayed another 3 weeks and because it's been delayed so long, I had to tell them to keep the order or cancel it, but gave me a 25% off my next order as an apology. Well, my original fear came true and they are now selling the FUSE version (but still not the Blue unfortunately) before the one I ordered was ever shipped. But that's awesome, because I was able to use that coupon to order the FUSE instead and then cancelled the original order.  So I got the jersey I wanted for only $6.30 more than the crappier version costs, and it also says it will be shipped immediately and get here early next week, or 2 weeks before the other was now supposed to be shipped out.
    • I've watched this and think we are well underway.  Believe it or not, Bryce is a big part of this.  The way he bounced back with such grace.  And we've got a lot of young players who want to make their mark, Dave is giving them an opportunity.  I loved our draft.  I like the number of guys we brought in, and they will help build the culture we want under Dave.  We're getting closer, and I think we'll see more wins this year than most of the board. The right culture breeds winning, and winning builds the right culture.  Imho, it's coming.
    • As others have said it's both. One creates the other. But it also takes time sometimes years. And there have been teams lately with new car smell coaching staffs that looked like they were putting it together quickly but things came crashing back down to Earth. Sustainability is the key. For that to happen the meddling of our owners has to stop and they cannot be tempted to return to their ways over any bump in the road either.
