Make sure upgrade actually is one

It started yesterday, and it's going to continue for the next week.

With Sunday's news that wide receivers Laveranues Coles (Jets) and Antonio Bryant (Bengals) were released yesterday, my twitter (@daringantt) practically exploded.

"Will the Panthers sign Bryant?" "Why not Coles?" "With the team needing receiver help, which one will they sign?"

The correct answer, you better hope, is neither.

The Panthers might not be averse to adding help at the receiver position (especially if Wallace Wright's shoulder turns out to be a problem), but these two aren't it.

Coles is done, a good idea five years ago, but not now.

Bryant made franchise money a year ago in Tampa and responded with 39 catches. He then signed a Mark Knopfler contract with the Bengals (Money for Nothing) and they cut him before he played a game. He's clearly not healthy, and even if he was I'm not sure you'd want to go there.

The Panthers insist their second receiver is already here. They're more confident than I am. Certainly they need to keep an eye on the waiver wire for upgrades.

They just have to make sure that anyone they bring in actually represents an upgrade.

If Dallas cuts Roy Williams...that's something I'd consider. Never really fit in on the Cowboys offense. Bryant has knee problems and Coles should retire.
not quite boldin but i wouldn't object to giving williams a call. he'll never live up to his early hupe and draft pick but he's still not an awful option across from smith. a much better choice than coles and bryant for sure.

if they do decide to stick with who we have, i think we'll be ok after having a very rough start the first couple games but i don't want to be just ok.

Way to nail that one Gantt.

The team cannot and should not just jump at any receiver, just cause the fans feel they must.

If a decent option does present itself, I'm sure the Panthers will consider it. Whether or not they pull the trigger though, is another debate all together.

I just don't understand all the Gantt hate. IMO, he's still one of the best, if not the best, of all the Panthers beat writers. I may not agree with everything he says or posts, but he has consistently scooped the other beat writers, even when he was at the Rock Hill Herald covering the Panthers all by himself.
