Where do you honestly see Smitty on the All Time Receiver list?

During the 2005 NFL season, Smith recovered from his injury and returned to the NFL, accomplishing the difficult Triple Crown of receiving by leading the NFL with 1,563 receiving yards and tying for receptions (103) and touchdowns (12). Prior to Smith, the Triple Crown had only been accomplished by Jerry Rice in 1990 and Sterling Sharpe in 1992. He also returned 27 punts for 286 yards, giving him the second highest return average of his career (10.6).

When you have a career like Smitty AND you add a stat that ends in "only accomplished by Jerry Rice and Sterling Sharp" I think you have made your case.

He also led the league in receptions on a team that ran more than it passed. The only other player to do that is Art Monk. Ironically I think he could end up like Art Monk and have to wait a while to be inducted...

right now on the all time lists he is:

96th in TDs (tied for it with 6 other guys)... he has 15-20 more TDs and he might get noticed.

68th in receptions.... at 574 he could get in the discussion if he gets another couple hundred.

64th in receiving yards... he is sitting on 8330 right now but it's going to take probably another 3000 yards to get in there.

in addition to a ring or two, if he plays to 35 years old he will probably need to have a minimum of 60 receptions, 950 yards, 7 TDs a year. that will get him pretty safely into the top 15 in each category. add in a ring and there and he'll be a shoe in.

This is why he needs a 2000yd season. He talked about doing it 2 seasons ago. If he can reach that then he's a shoe in. As of now the only way he will get in is if the guys that do this HOF stuff consider Smith's circumstances.

For me personally he is my #1. Non-homer pick he is still in the top 10. In terms of talent and big play ability there really isn't anyone as good or better.

I've never seen someone so clutch and so electrifying. He makes catches that aren't supposed to happen. He can score at will (06 NFC Champ game). Triple Crown winner. He has never had the supporting cast of guys like Fitgerald, Harrison, or Moss. His broken leg in 04 ruined that season for him. Jake stole his season away last year. He will deserve to go to the HOF, will it happen? I don't know.

Those are some nice stats too, but they messed something up. 7 people have achieved the receiving triple crown, not 3. That's still great company, one of only 7 people in all the years the NFL has been around.

Steve Smith has been cursed by playing on a run first team like the Panthers.

If Smith had been fortunate enough to play on a run and gun type NFL team, then he might have had a HOF type career but unfortunatly it was not to be.

But then he wouldn't be nearly as impressive.

Sorry, I'm just not impressed by receivers who have the perfect conditions in order to pad their stats.

Smith is one of my favorite receivers of all time. Is he one of the greatest? He might be, but he's going to have to churn and burn for the next four to five years to get in the HoF. There are some stalwarts on that selection committee that are stats mavens and they aren't going to look at film of him breaking tackle after tackle, scratching and clawing for the ball or just smoking some defensive back at the point of catch. And those guys are enough to keep him out.

Can he do it? You know, I really believe it is up to him. The QB doesn't matter, the run first thing doesn't matter. When he wants it, no one can take the ball from him, and it takes the third man to really have a shot at tackling him. When he's in a pissy mood or feeling dissed, well, he just becomes a regular WR. When he wants it, you can throw the ball anywhere and he'll come down with it ... tiptoeing the sideline for 20 yards, leaping four to seven feet in the air, swinging from the rafters in a dome, whatever, he makes it happen.

But if he gets down and feels his team doesn't respect him, he falls far. And he often punches someone's lights out.

You can say what you will about it being a knock on him that he ended up in Carolina and that it will keep him from being a big star, but I have a different take on it. Had he been anywhere else, he'd be a footnote. They'd have put him on a bus the first time he attacked a team mate. Luckily he found himself with Fox, Richardson and Kasay around him. Without them, he'd just be an angry young man who only glimpsed his potential.

And lucky for us, too, because we have been able to enjoy the most electrifying player in the game. One of my favorites for sure, but it's up to him to be one of the greats.
