Searching for jobs while employed

So it's getting to the point where I'm pretty convinced I need a different job. I knew coming in last Dec that this position wasn't completely ideal but I was drawing unemployment and needed something. I feel like I should start actively looking instead of just keeping an eye out.

Has anyone had some experience doing this before? How can I interview? Is having an existing job a big turnoff for employers, even though I can explain my reasoning very well? Anyone ever get burned trying to do this?

Not a turnoff at all. When I was at Wachovia pretty much all I did all day (ontop of my job) was apply and search for jobs online. You don't have to tell them you are going to interviews, just tell them you have a doctors appt or something.

You have the right to refuse to tell your interviewer where you work or you canjust describe what you do withouth telling them the name of your employer. they only need to know enough information as you want to give them. they totally wont think its a bad thing. this shows you have good work ethic and you are able to handle one job while looking for another (which is a job in itself, trust me its a bitch!) it also shows ur not a bum just sittin around waitin for a job offer

That's what I'm worried about. I'm grateful to be employed but I could write an essay about the problems I have with the company I'm working for and why I'd like to go somewhere else. But I do like the people I work with. And I genuinely feel sorry for my boss and what he has to deal with and know it'd be a setback for him if I left.

do NOT go bad mouthing potential new employers about your current company. just give them some babble about how you are looking for a position with more responsibility and more opportunity to move up, etc.

I never told them I had an interview when I was at Wachovia. They would have been pissed if I had said that and would have told me to find my own time to do it. Guess it depends on the company you work for. Plus its pretty awkward to tell your boss you wanna leave so you can go spend time during the day to look for a way out of where you are.

Are you kidding me, every time i'm unemployed I pretend that I am still working at my previous job. This has multiple benefits.

1.they can't call my old job and find out the i cursed them out on my way out the door because they can't call my "current" employer without my consent.

2.You look much more valuable than someone who is unemployed.

    • I don't really care as much about athleticism and arm strength.  While Murray might be better in that regard, I think Bryce has enough of both to do well in the NFL. The main reason this trade reference is silly is the money and the fact that Murray has been around a long while and hasn't proven that he can perform consistently when the game is on the line.  Bryce has shown that he can play well in the clutch (in the few opportunities he has had).
    • If Bryce can continue the level of play he showed after the benching, then there's a good shot we at least compete to win the division. Tampa is a solid team but even last year in our week division they went 10-7 and will be on their 4th OC in as many years. The Saints are a mess and are in a mist of a half rebuild half still trying to compete mode and will probably be starting a rookie QB. The Falcons are a wild card as they have a really good offense but are we really crowning Michael Penix as a franchise QB after just 3 games?  The only thing I want out of this season is for Bryce to come out and without a shadow of a doubt prove he's our franchise QB. If that happens then most of the fanbase would be happy and I believe we'd be in a good place record wise at the end of the season. Maybe falling just short of winning the division with a chance to sneak in as a wild card team.
