NFLPA Boss: Lockout Likely

Anybodyhome

Recommended Posts

The simple fact is the NFLPA needs to find a way to make a deal cause the owners have the upper hand. The owners still get there Money from TV deals and such. So they can make 50% of there money even without the players. Thats not bad and means they can wait a lot longer then the PA can. While they have tried to block this but it dose not seem like they are going to win so 50% revenue without players is a big deal.

If the players made the league what it is, then we would be talking about the USFL championship game in July while we were waiting for the NFL to start in September.

Exactly. Most fans identify with the TEAMS. Players come and go, but teams are around a whole lot longer. Teams also represent the pride of the local city or region.

Do you think most people in Dallas identify with Tony Romo? Do most Giant's fans think of Eli Manning when they think about their team? Hell no.

Now... some players are an exception... and do become the "Franchise Player" and a figurehead for the team... but this is VERY rare.

So to that point... if the player's union wants to balk at a new contract, over an increase in money when the entire nation is in a massive economic slump... and the owners are forced to lock them out... then screw em. Lets get new players and piss on the NFLPA.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the owners locking out the NFLPA, not canceling football, right? A lockout would effectively cancel football unless they hired replacements, like last time. I don't think the question is "Can they?" as much as "Will they?"

The Owners can sustain a lockout for a pretty long time without feeling it in the pocketbook, especially with that DirectTV contract (which may demand replacement games). The players can't. My money is on management.

Players aren't employees, they are contractors. They don't negotiate salaries, they negotiate contracts. There are labor laws and contract/business laws that would be violated if the owners simply called in replacements once they declared a lockout. There would be major financial repercussions and penalties against the owners. There has never been a lockout in the NFL .... it was a players' strike last time .... so nothing will be the same as "last time".

I believe there simply will be no football. As there was no hockey for the NHL where there was an owners' lockout.

I tried to explain it here http://www.carolinahuddle.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2645595&postcount=35

You are correct. If the owner's initiate a lockout, they cannot bring in scrubs.

"The 1987 strike was a player strike that lasted 24 days. A lot different from an owner's lockout. If it were a player strike there would be scabs willing to cross a picket line and play. But this is an owner's lockout and there will be no picket line to cross, no scabs and no football."

What I said back on page 2
