Another problem with going young on the eve of a lockout.

Generally when you have young players, specifically first year players, the first offseason is absolutely critical to their success.

During the season, there's only so much coaching on technique that you can do. Obviously these guys get a crash course during OTA, ST, and preseason, but you can bet that they're spending more time trying to learn a stripped down version of a playbook that's 20 times what they had in college or trying not to be murdered on the field to worry about things like footwork and timing.

After the first season, that's when they go back and work on these small things that you have to have to excel in the NFL. I'm not exactly sure the details, but you'd have to think that a lockout of the players would include barring them from team facilities and access to coaches and trainers. You'd essentially be losing a year of mental development from them.

It's true there are numerous private workout places where many athletes spend part of their summers, but from what I understand (and I have some buddies who work with the huge on in Atlanta) they focus more on very specific athletic skills, like faster burst or something like that. If you watch this offseason training video of Beason, you can see he's not actually working on any technique, just physical explosiveness.

and here is a peyton manning quote to prove my point

“They’re trying to get rid of offseason workouts,” Manning said. “They’re talking about extending the season to 18 games, so they’re going to cut down the offseason stuff in return. That’s not a fair trade. Offseason workouts – that’s how we’ve gotten our edge over the years. It’s how you really develop a player and improve your craft.

“Without the offseason, how do get anybody ready to play? I’ve thrown to Blair White since we picked him up in April, and there’s no way he’s ready to play [sunday] if I don’t have those reps with him. In training camp, there just aren’t enough reps to get familiar with a guy [near the bottom of the depth chart]. You’ve got be able to throw to him in the spring – otherwise I wouldn’t feel good about rushing him out there.”

i'm really hoping that the players union getting decertified will put an end to the lockout of course since the NFLPA tried playing that card before (and won) it's likely it wouldn't work again because it would be obvious they were trying to pull the same stunt they did back in '93.

one way or the other, i hope they all get their act together and get things settled somehow. i really want to see what kind of team we wind up with once jerry starts spending again.

    • You bring up a good point on the stability part and i would agree that probably will factor into it. But yes, Tepper does have a strong influence on who stays/goes but I still believe ultimately it'is Morgan, Tilis and Canales who will decide.
    • I can always count on yout to put things so delicately lol. I'm still not sold on the fact that Tepper will make them keep him if they don't see him as a long term answer.
    • holy poo... this thread inspired me to keep trying to guess passwords to various alts I've created over the years and I finally got in! I pretty much accepted my fate as a lurker for the last several months because I could not remember my password. I didn't realize that new users couldn't join either, that explains things. I have been around for years under several different monikers, through the good and bad. I too always find myself coming back here even with all of the new social media options for Panther fan engagement. It's simply nostalgic.   I do get extremely annoyed with the same 5-10 posters shitting on Bryce and complaining about everything. It's unfortunate that half of them are mods and that nobody new can join because now I pretty much just come on here and see Bryce / Panther slander. There is barely any positivity to be had. We all watch this team and hang on this forum for entertainment purposes only. We have no control or say in anything. I used to be such a crazy ass fan that would argue with strangers about Cam newton on the internet and at games. Now, as a father of 3, a business owner and someone with way gnarlier life problems - I like to watch football and talk about football as an escape. Not to bitch more. I really like the direction of the team and will root anyone in a Panthers jersey. I live down the street from the Rams practice facility, Matthew Stafford is currently coaching his daughters flag football team in the same program I coach my sons. I have two highly ranked Rams staff members sons on my team. The way we beat them and had them on the ropes in the playoffs has me feeling amazing, and you would think we have the next great thing in Bryce with the way they all speak of him. I'm gonna ride that high and be a delusional fan, I hope that huddle can stick around or get fixed and perhaps I will get back to posting more now that I can log in again. I will do my best to not get banned. Keep Pounding!
