now this is an issue he needs to work on...he puts a lot of zip on the ball and needs to realize, for shorter passes in the NFL, take some off of the ball and get it in the air a bit

Good point, I did notice he gets more balls batted than most QBs I've watched. Certainly his pocket has been collapsing far too early.

He's not a tall guy, that surely has something to do with it. I'm going to have to pay attention to his wind up to really figure out where the problem lies or if today he was just unlucky.

I was hoping that's what Brees was telling him after the game when they got together to talk!

Brees is like 4 foot 5 inches, but doesn't have many balls batted down. He recognizes the throwing lane & creates them by shifting (with or without moving laterally).

If Clausen recognizes this & has a coach to hep him work on it, he will be fine. Brees had this problem when he was with San Diego, but seems to be doing "a little better" now! If Clausen can do what Brees is doing we would be thrilled!
