Give me a list of coaches we could "afford" to hire

I say the word "afford" b/c we all know Richardson has become a cheapo. Cowher is likely to be expensive. George Seifert wanted lots of dough when hired & he was still trash. Plus, Pat Yasinkas had a good point in this article:

The best coaches we've hired in the best were "hot" coordinators from another team, such as Fox from NY (i.e. defensive coordinator), not former head coaches. So give me a list of coordinators/coaches, other than Cowher & Dungy, you think would make a big improvement on the Panthers & we could "afford"

it's just this year that he's turned into a "cheapo".

after this mess is sorted out we'll be the same spend happy team we've always been. fox is one of the highest paid coaches there is and the next will end up being that way as well, esp. after he shows what he can do.

btw...we have lists in quite a few other threads. look them up.

Richardson hasn't become a cheap-o, you're really being way too limited in your thinking when you start with that point of view. A cheap-o would have held on to the contracts he's paying out now instead of swallowing the costs and going young.

Coach is also a position where you can get a huge bang for your buck, and he knows that as well. He's also got a history of paying coaches well.

Finally, it's not like coaches make a fortune, especially compared to players.

So to really answer your question, we can afford to hire whoever we want. If you're looking for potential names, I think there's a long thread on this board that can't be more than a few pages down.

With no cap, there is no cap hit from any cuts and there won't be. I don't know of any other payouts except Delhomme's.

Yep, we can afford to hire whoever we want. Always have been. But JR's already demonstrated that there are more important things than building a winning franchise. That will determine who we have as coach not the money.

The fact that there's no cap means we could spend as much as we want. It doesn't mean that we're obligated to spend anything, and there's no floor either.

The fact that we're eating contracts anyway goes against the whole "save money at any cost" idea that's put forth by the ignorant and angry.

I don't understand this line of thinking. How does positioning yourself to potentially be in a better financial position than the majority of the league coming out on the other side of the CBA negotiations while simultaneously making sure the organization is financially sound in the event of a lockout, suddenly make you an owner who has no future interest whatsoever in winning? You honestly think that JR is putting himself up as a martyr for the NFL?

Just maybe, yes. See this explanation, especially the last paragraph (yeah, I'm tired of typing the same thing over & over).

I don't see how what he has done is making sure the organization is financially sound in the event of a lockout. Other teams may have a larger payroll to begin with but they also will have more players signed. And once our RA's are signed, if they are, we will be spending as much as others. And what if the salary ranges go up? Then we'll be spending more.

AND we won't have a coaching staff or GM. More money will have to be spent there.

No, I don't see how we'll be better off at all. This is all a lesson to the players & union, "see how low I can go."

Putting himself and the other Panther owners in a better position? Maybe. You never know what banks will do these days. They probably would want a winning franchise too.

Yeah, I've read your post. No need to keep linking it in thread after thread. I didn't really read anything that I haven't read before by other people with knee jerk reactions to what JR has done this season.

The fact that you seem to be dismissing is that JR has always had great relations with his players, and this has been stated over and over again in the press by the players. You seem to operate under the notion that JR isn't communicating with this team. I would be willing to bet that there has been more than one dialog between the FO and the players and agents concerning the teams position going forward.

See, there is no guarantee at this point on what the salary cap will be and how contracts will be set up after the new CBA is in place. Teams that make multiple long term contracts in an uncapped year under expiring CBA terms may potentially be severely handicapping themselves going forward. JR has intentionally held off on offering any new large contracts until after the negotiations are complete. But I would think you are mistaken to believe that there have not been talks concerning their intended direction once a CBA is in place with the players.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
