Potential Head Coaches

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Peter King's the only person I know of to mention him, and I think he was just talking off the top of his head.

Possible, I suppose, but I don't really think it'll happen.

I didn't figure that anyone was talking about him. It'd be a long shot but the fact he hand crafted his own offense makes him potentially very valuable as an OC, that sort of creativity is extremely rare in pro football these days. When it comes down to it most of the pro offenses stem back to 3-4 basic designs and the only real differences are playcalling and personnel. I doubt JR or Hurney would lean that direction as they are more conservative but JR has surprised us in the past.

And another...

Jerry Simmons has been the Panthers Strength and Conditioning Coach since 1999, so obviously he was here when Harbaugh stopped by in 2001.

The surprise though, is that this wasn't their first meeting. Harbaugh played one season for the Baltimore Ravens, starting 12 games in 1998. Simmons was serving in the same capacity with the Ravens at the time. He and Harbaugh were both out of Baltimore the following season, with Harbaugh going to San Diego and Simmons joining the Panthers.

Harbaugh fans might want to go back and read his profile again. The "Panther Connection" area has been pretty heavily rewritten based on tonight's searches. I actually expected to find at least a few connections with other candidates, but there was only one (Mike Heimerdinger worked with Panthers LB Coach Richard Smith for two years in Denver).

You must drink a lot of coffee :-)

I would consider Heimerdinger as a candidate for HC if it were not for the cancer treatments

Dr. Pepper, and I sometimes suffer from insomnia :(

Added a long list of teammates from Harbaugh's playing career too. Included some fun guys to remember like Jeff Mitchell and Paul Butcher.

In any case, learned a lot today. And thinking about a possible brighter future helps me forget that we lost today to the Browns.

(or at least it did until now) :(

I just thought of something. I do NOT think Cowher is coming here, but if he did, He could be given the power he wants while still keeping Marty Hurney. It could be one of those Shannahan type deals, where the GM stays put, and Cowher gets the title of Head Coach and VP of Football Operations (we don't currently have one...). Just a thought.

On the upcoming list, Clarence Shelmon interests me. Anyone know any info about him? The stuff I could find on the web isn't that extensive.

I was curious to see what type of input he has in the SD offense since Norv is such an offensive guy. Anyone?

there is just nothing appealing to me about grimm coming here. other than the fact that he's a HoFer and has coached the oline for two teams that made the superbowl.

i also think the title of "assistant head coach" is something that people put too much stock into.

i'd rather have rob ryan than russ grimm and i don't particularly like either one.

also, i'm of the school of thought that richardson and hurney are going to be looking for more of a young dynamic/salesperson type personality for the job (not that it will be the sole qualifier). russ grimm just isn't that. i wouldn't exactly call him an offensive minded coach either. he's OL. he might know something about blocking schemes, but thats not a whole lot different from being a defenisve minded coach.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
