I think it's time to say... Steve Smith isn't elite anymore.

hahaha look at all the butthurt homers. Smitty hasn't been elite for 2 years now. Welcome to reality.

everyone quick line up to make excuses why it's not his fault...

Doesn't matter if you consider him elite or just good or whatever...the fact is this past Sunday doesn't mean anything unless it's followed by another 2-3 games of sub-par performance.

Then you can start talking about how he's not Elite, or good, or whatever it is you consider him to be.

Its proven the past couple of years. How many times has he been shutout of games, dropping easy passes and running wrong routes.

There is only one way a receiver can get the ball. Bad offensive line and QB play can shut a receivers game down. The QB's and Oline have been shaky to say the least.

Unlike some of you I'm reserving judgment on Smitty. With an offensive coach and a good QB he would be top 5 or better. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water on this one.

the past couple of years? In 2008 he lead the NFL in yards per game.

So that means you are putting a lot of stock in the Jake Delhomme implosion of 2009 and those games.

In 2009 and 2010 Steve had 7 games w/ Matt Moore as the starter. 569 yards and 5 TDs. That is a pace of 1300 and 11 TDs if he ever played a full season w/ Moore. Also, worth noting is Smitty and Moore didn't play full games for all 7 of those.

If Gettis and LaFell prove to be the real deal, then I don't care what Smith is considered as.

He's helping to slowly put LaFell and Gettis on the map. If it works, if defenses start thinking about ways to stop Gettis and LaFell also, then Smith has done his job. Smith will get his yards, eventually.

    • You're correct. But PFF does indeed use advanced stats to come up with their grades. Not trying to turn this into a debate about PFF (at all because it's been done ad nauseum), but here is how PFF explain it:   GRADES VS. STATS We aren’t grading players based on the yardage they rack up or the stats they collect. Statistics can be indicative of performance but don’t tell the whole story and can often lie badly. Quarterbacks can throw the ball straight to defenders but if the ball is dropped, you won't see it on the stat sheet. Conversely, they can dump the ball off on a sequence of screen passes and end up with a gaudy looking stat line if those skill position players do enough work after the catch. PFF grades the play, not its result, so the quarterback that throws the ball to defenders will be downgraded whether the defender catches the ball to notch the interception on the stat sheet or not. No amount of broken tackles and yards after the catch from a bubble screen will earn a quarterback a better grade, even though his passing stats may be getting padded. The same is true for most positions. Statistics can be misleading. A tackle whose quarterback gets the ball out of his hands quicker than anybody else may not give up many sacks, but he can still be beaten often and earn a poor grade. Receivers that are targeted relentlessly could post big-time numbers but may offer little more than the product of a volume-based aerial attack. https://www.pff.com/grades So PFF uses stats to come up with player grades and rankings.
