Question: Donovan McNabb as a Panther in 2011?

Again, for those who didn't read - I said he would be used as a transitional guy until the young QB is ready (Clausen or ANDREW LUCK lol).

Secondly, for those arguing about 'isn't he a WCO guy?' Only because Andy Reid is. McNabb obviously doesn't lack arm strength, so he isn't a system guy. Additionally, if that impeded us form signing a vet QB in the past under Fox, someone should've told AJ Feely and Josh McCown (during his time with Raiders, may have been with Cardinals). So yeah, you need another reason to not sign him...

I'm not sold on McNabb. I have nothing against him, he has compiled a fine career over all. But I think his best days are well behind him. The Eagles came to that conclusion, and had no qualms about trading him to a division rival in the process. THAT in itself speaks volumes. He's been injury prone in recent years, and he's taking a beating on the 'Skins this year so far. If he came over to us, he'd have to learn yet a new scheme and personnel. The 'Skins and him would be better off with each other for next year.

If I were to take a chance on obtaining a non-rookie QB, I'd take a look at Painter of the Colts or Hoyer of the Pats. I mention them not because of any significant career achievements, but they have been backing up true Hall-of-Fame QBs in their respective towns, and perhaps, because of that, they might bring something more than can be hoped for from other prospects. Combined with new (and hopefully better) coaching here, perhaps they would offer some promise! Given where we are at now, what would he have to lose? On the college front, the kid I like is Kellen Moore of Boise State. He's a junior this year, and I don't know how he is rated by the scouts, but I like watching him, and he keeps his poise and delivers.

From what I have observed, Donovan, old and out of shape, injured hamstrings and all, is better than anything we have on our roster.

To me, it's a win/win, he gets to come into a place where he can do his thing for a year or so, and giving the younger players a chance to learn how to be a NFL QB.

In that scenario, I'd take a guy who has been there and done that to the SuperBowl level, in the arena itself as the teacher than someone who observed.

Just my thoughts. Of the possible free agents, he is probably the pick of the litter, and as bad as that litter may be, it's better than the litter we currently have, no matter the reason.

The one thing I give credence to in that is having a veteran QB who used to play at a playoff level available for our young QBs to learn from. THAT is the thing we are missing this year after having cut Jake loose. Moore had Jake on the sidelines last year to confer with when he came off the field, and I think that had everything to do with his perfomrnace over the last 5 games. McNabb could certainly provide that.

But as far as it being a 'win/win', in that McNabb would be able to 'do his thing', what 'thing' is that? If that doesn't result in wins, what would be gained with him as the starter? I don't know that we offer him a better cast of characters on the "O" side of the ball here compared to what he has in Washington now. Both "O" lines are suspect, that's for sure.

I agree that our QBs are suffering from not having a true veteran on the sidelines with and for them. But that's the only real role I see for McNabb, and I'll wager he still sees himself as a starter somewhere.

McNabb can do what mid-tier NFL QB can do, he has done it, he can do it again; he has the arm, he still can move, and he can handle the ball enough to sell a fake, something neither of our young QBs do very well.

I am not a big Mcnabb fan, I'm just saying, of the available decent FA QBs, it will be McNabb as the pick of the litter. If not him, then why even bother.

He is not Peyton Manning, but, there are 31 other starters who aren't Peyton either. In every generation there is one great QB and Peyton is this generation's.

McNabb, I believe can still manage a game at a much higher level then anyone we currently have.

He is getting older and older equates to cheaper and stop gap and there is nothing wrong with that. Give him a front load bonus and a cheap contract.

Not that im opposed to McNabb as a WCO guy but he def would not work in any other system. He took forever to learn the WCO and I would expect he would take way too long to learn another system. WCO=yes Anything else=No

McNabb HAS done it...but age and injuries, I believe, have taken their toll. He may have a few decent years left though. He can throw a decent deep ball. Good game manager from what I have seen of him. He's thrown a TD-INT ratio of 7:8 paired with a 76.0 QB rating this season. IDK. Just depends on how good the OL is next year, who we bring in as a coach, etc.

Yeah, most of this has been covered in this thread already. But, who knows. I think he'd be a good vet for Clausen to look at though as his career comes to an end.

Probably not happening though.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
