Schefter: "Cowher Definitely Will Not Be the Dallas Coach"

2 possible reasons:

1) joat hasn't moved it yet stating that since it doesn't have anything to do with someone not currently associated with the panthers, it doesn't belong here

or

2) it isn't about jim harbaugh who joat doesn't like and believes has no chance of being our next coach which means it's ok to stay.

Well OK then.

that doesn't mean he's coming here.

a number of NFL jobs are going to open up next year... Dallas, ours, Jax, 49ers, Chargers... who am I missing?

cincy

texans (if kubiak can't get a >.500 season again)

minny

oakland (no coach is safe with the crypt keeper)

browns (although this becomes less likely after beating the pats)

lovie smith (his contract runs out in 2011 and there hasn't been much effort or talk re: extending him. they might just go ahead and cut bait if the martz experiment doesn't work)

bills (anything is possible with a 1 win team if they can even get that)

colts (extreme ooal here, but if they are in danger of losing peyton who might not like caldwell's coaching, do they keep the legend or find a HC that he can win with?)

there's probably a couple more, but those and the ones you mentioned are probably the most likely ones.

one thing to watch for, the vast majority of those job openings will go to first time HCs (perry fewell is one i would consider in that category). probably only two or three openings will go to retreads. there's going to be a lot of competition for those couple spots that are going to retreads. cowher is pretty much guaranteed to get one and gruden is probably going to get one as well. rumors are that dungy might make a return somewhere. also, consider that turner, lovie, lewis, billick, and a few other out of work or soon to be out of work HCs will be serious considerations...fox will have his work cut out for him in finding a HC job.

i can't imagine cowher in oakland. almost impossible to picture the train wreck that would be.

It'd be fun to watch, though

Looking back at old threads, here's a quote from last September 30th.

You know what I really, really hate to admit?

When you look at the pure numbers (excluding this year) Fox actually stacks up pretty good against a fair share of the bigger name candidates out there. And while he's not as young as some of the most recent guys, he's younger than or on par with a lot of the retreads.

After the initial rebuilding year in which he took a team that was 1-15 to within a shade of the playoffs, he's gone to the playoffs in three of his six years. That includes two championship game appearances and a Super Bowl appearance. He's never been more than a game under 500 on a season (granted that could change this year). And throw in that he has a winning record in the postseason at 5-3, a record which could be even better if not for a QB meltdown last year.

Now that doesn't mean I definitely want to keep him, mind you. I'm very iffy on that for a lot of reasons.

But what it does mean is that if he is let go, he'll look pretty good to a team looking for a coaching replacement. It's no stretch to believe he'll get another head coaching job right off the bat.

Here's a thought. Suppose Jerry Jones fires Wade Phillips but can't lure Shanahan or Holmgren, and then either he decides Jason Garrett isn't ready or Garrett chooses to amscray. In that scenario, Fox could become an attractive candidate to be the next Cowboys head coach

If that happened, and he was successful there, I'd vomit.

(repeatedly) :puke:

I live in Big D and hear all the local media...let me just tell you this: Jerry will throw the checkbook at Cowher, it will be up to Cowher if he can resist 7 or 8 mil a year
