Yesterday's game against the Ravens showed us all a startling revalation: The Panthers administration could still make money off the team even when they are easily the worst team in the NFL. We all know Charlotte is a city of transplants with many fans already of other allegiances. Yesterday was easily the worst I've ever heard. I wasn't at the game but when you hear "HEAAAAAAAAAAAP" louder than we used to hear "MOOOOOOSE" it's a startling sign.

So...could a perennial laughing stock couldn't-beat-a-good-college-team be in mind for Richardson until if/when the economy turns around? When other teams fans know the Panthers will just get waxed on Sundays, and they know Panther fans don't want to watch a crap ass team, away games become home games and there's nothing Panther fans can really do about it!

Was this year just in preperation for the lockout or is this some new and scary way of making money for Richardson?

Honestly, I think it was a preparation for the possible lockout.

Am I kind of pissed at JR at having wasted a season. YEP!

However, I do believe that JR wants to have and will have a good team here in Carolina. I think he does want to win. I think we are very fortunate to have an owner who actually played the game at this level and understands the game.

However, he is also a successful businessman and that means thinking in the long term sometimes. I think he plans to have this team poised to be ready to make a move once the new CBA is finalized.

So can I understand it... Maybe.. Can I accept a write off year... painful Do I like it...Hell no.

Would I take one very bad season if it sets us up to be very competitive for a few years instead of mediocrity right now... Absolutely.

Yeah, sure. A guy who spent a significant portion of his life into bringing a team here, a guy who's made this his primary life's work, and a guy who fired his own sons rather than let their conflict affect the team, that guy just suddenly turned around one day and said "Screw it, I'll gut the team and keep the cash."

Youth movements happen all the time. The big difference is they usually don't coincide with the last year of a coach's contract. The combo of lame duck coach and players he's never going to coach again is a bad one.

I realize losing has made people a little goofy here, but basing your opinion of how the franchise is run on this year and ignoring every year before that is just ridiculous :nonod:

Say what you want about how crappy fan support is for the Panthers, but putting a team in a place like Charlotte where there are lots of transplanted people was genius.

For whatever reason we can bring in fans of every NFL team, whether they live here or just travel for the game.

Jacksonville can only wish opposing team fans would visit their crappy town.

It's youth movement and prep for a possible lockout.

What exactly does Richardson have to gain from the team being lousy for a sustained period of time? We don't have the history of a team like the Raiders or even the Lions. The fanbase here is not do deep and rooted that they'll continue to pay to see a poor team.

The notion that Jerry Richardson wants a cheap team more than he wants a good team is crazy.

I think there were business issues that drove a good bit of the money and roster moves this year. However, I agree with Mr. Scot, that JR wants a winning team here in Carolina. I think his long term vision incorporated this year into the calculation.

The notion that Jerry Richardson wants a cheap team more than he wants a good team is crazy.

With a potential lockout looming, Richardson made a sound BUSINESS move and a horrible FOOTBALL move. He cut all the vets making high paychecks (exception being Delhomme, still paying him if I'm not mistaken). He still makes all the money from ticket sales from PSL's and opposing team fans, and doesn't have to pay his players as much as in the past.

It was more than a youth movement, it was a cost cutting movement. I mean not even a vet backup QB? Why did they even draft Tony Pike?

      I understand the concerns--he is not P. Sewell or Joe Thomas.  He has technique issues and was not great in the run game and was good in pass protection when UGA did not pass much.  Then there is the immediate need vs long term need perspective.   I did not see Freeland being there-frankly. Here is why:   He has nearly 35" arms and his hands are large (10.5").  He ran a 4.93 40 at the combine.  He is very agile.  His vertical was 33.5".   Physically, he is a freak. He is 21 and he seems very intelligent (coachable). You have to remember, some of these rookies are 24, 25 years old. Freeling is A team player.  His shortcomings are fixable.  Short arms (as with the kids from Utah and Miami) are not fixable.  The Run on OTs began at #9: Fano (picked 10 picks earlier) has 32" arms and his hands are 9".  He did not play in the SEC like Freeling.  Many think the short arms project him to guard. Mauigoa (picked 10th) has 33" arms.  He is a solid player, but his arms make him borderline as a T (they seek 34" and up as ideal)  Kayden Proctor (picked 12th overall) struggled in pass protection and projects by many to RT or G.  Weight management is a concern. So it is possible that Freeling will be the first LT taken who actually plays LT.  (he also has the ability and experience to play RT)  His questions are fixable and not limited to physical limitations.  Here is the question:  If you know that you need a Tackle, and you could choose between all four of these players, who would you pick? I am not sure that Freeling would not be the player I selected if given the opportunity to take any of them.

      The more I think about this pick the more I like it. The Icky injury might end up being a blessing in disguise for everyone except Icky unfortunately. If Freeling pans out at LT the Panthers have a good player on a rookie contract at a premium position at a time when they’re going to need to potentially pay Bryce for his next contract. Icky was likely going to command a big salary jump for his next contract and now, there’s a strong justification he’s not going to be worth a big money extension until he rehabs and proves he can still play at a high level. Since he’s finishing his rookie deal this season, it will be interesting to see if the Panthers bring him back for the 2027 season. Obviously it’s too early to say and they will probably wait to see how the season pans out with Moton still elite but aging and clearly battling persistent injuries, and they need to see if Freeling can develop into a starter during his rookie year. But ultimately this might have opened up a huge chunk of salary cap for the next 4-5 years.

      You read my mind Nastradamus! If Rodriguez is still there I feel like it will be hard to pass on him. And one of these TE we keep drafting have to hit eventually and Delp is just as good as the others.
