And the only reason that happened is because Eli refused to play for SD.

I dont disagree at all.

Heres a hypothetical for you.

Say Harbaugh takes the san fran job and they pick somewhere in the 7-10 range. anway say they take newton and then offer him, this years 2nd and next years first for Luck? would you consider that?

Or is there no way in hell you trade luck away for anything?

Had to be 04 right?

Chargers sent eli to nyg who had the 4th pick and selcted rivers with it and also got a 3rd and next years 1st and 5th?

I didnt research it so dont take it the bank but i think thats what the compensation was.

the last 1 to be traded before the draft was us trading the Vick pick in 01. The Jets traded the Pace pick in 97, and I swore NE traded the Maryland pick in 91.

No way. I have said it before I have 0 faith in Newton for the next level. His style of play will not work.

Right now I am at the point I am hoping we loose out. Flame me all you want but moral victories don't do poo for us. We will have all new staff next year so nothing from this year carries over to next.

The more I read and hear about Luck I would not trade him away for anything. I have been warming up to the idea for a while but now the national media is saying he is the best QB prospect since Elway. (Cowherd, Patrick, Rome etc.) Not one knock on the kid he is already in a pro style offense. To me if we end up with luck and if he is even 75% as good as everyone says then this year will all be worth it for the next decade.

If this was any other draft in the past 5 years I would not be opposed to trading away the pick but I honestly think we are getting a Brady/Manning/Bress type player. That does not happen often.

If we draft Luck and he looks like our QB for the next ten years, I'm assuming we will trade Clausen for whatever we can get (which probably wouldn't be much) to a team that thinks they can develop him.

Meh, I say sit him on the bench like Kolb or Cassell for a year or two then trade him. Get more value that way.

only risk with that is clausen might still suck. wait...you're talking about sticking clausen on the bench for a couple years and hiding his "skills". still think the sooner we trade him off, the better.

cool, i work saturdays so thats kept me away being able to follow college football like i do the nfl. I am warming up this Luck kid quite a bit myself.

Just hard for me to get too excited about a rookie qb after being burned by Clausen, but then again Clausen wasnt nearly as hyped as Luck is

Clausen get passed on by 32 other NFL teams, twice by some.

Still don't think Clausen is as bad as some think. When you have a coach that doesn't like rookie QBs and doesn't want to take the time to develop them, you get what happened here this year. I just hope he is not damaged goods and we will be able to trade him.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
