Can you turn an old iphone into an ipod?

I am possibly buying an older iphone from a buddy of mine to use strictly as an ipod. Is there a way to do this?

I know you can do it the other way around. I would think it would work, but I'm not hip to the dip.

yea, pretty sure you can as long as it has been activated. wifi, movies, music the whole shebang.

Umm doesn't the iphone already play stuff the ipod does? I would assume you can get stuff on an iphone through your comp from the itune store or if not, keep a data plan on the phone to download directly.

I know that it plays music, but now that it has been erased by the owner, and they deactivated the phone/cancelled the plan, I was wondering if it would still work.

As long as you have a way to get media on it, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

an iphone without a sim card installed IS an ipod touch, basically. i use my old 8mb 3g as an ipod all the time. as long as you have wifi and itunes on your computer, it's pretty simple. you dont even really need wifi i guess, you can just plug it in directly.

it will still connect through wifi for downloading apps, music, internet and installing updates and stuff.
