If you want Luck, Harbaugh is the key

That's the point I don't get, Mav. I want us to move in a definite offensive mindset, and have a good, young coach to do so with. But, I think there are options out there who are just as viable.

Mike McCoy, for one. He already knows some of the players, is familiar with the organization, and the facilities. Sure, Darin Gantt says he's uncharismatic, but he also says that Mike McCoy is highly regarded in the Panthers organization.

Then, there's another guy who I really wouldn't mind as our head coach. Mike Mularkey. I know that's not the "cool" thing to think, but the guy had two 9 win seasons in Buffalo! Buffalo!!

But, I digress. I just want to know the obsession with Harbaugh. I see these people, who are like, "OMGz WE MUST HAVE HARBAUGH OR ELSE I BE BOOIN' NEXT SEASUN!" or something along those lines...

I want Harbaugh to leave Stanford. I would like him to come here, but I don't mind if he goes elsewhere. There's a thread for head coaching discussion, this one is basically saying that getting Harbaugh out of Stanford is key... and getting him here virtually guarantees that Luck will be on our roster next year.

Also, I didn't realize Mularkey had two winning seasons in Buffalo, I thought only one. He was only there for 2 seasons, wasn't he? I guess 2 winning seasons is pretty nice if that's the case, but he hasn't exactly been amazing since...

Anyway, there are other candidates than Harbaugh. Everything I've heard and read has me thinking Harbaugh would be great, but I recognize that it's not the end of the world if he goes elsewhere, I just really want Luck to come out. :P

Ummmm does anybody else not want to rush to throw our head coaching job at a guy who spent one year as the Raiders quarterback coach?

I agree with you this time, but the way you present this is slanted. Did you evaluate the job he did as QB coach?

Now, what about the job he did as head coach at Stanford? Of course, Sabin and Spurrior prove that could mean little, but that is more telling of his coaching abilities. You just brought out the fact that he has NFL assistant coaching experience.

I agree in this respect: Do not hire the coach to get the player. If that were the approach, hire his father, the AD at west virginia with NFL experience as head of scouting. Hire his mom as a secretary.

We are not recruiting Luck. Harbaugh will leave Stanford unless he doesn't get a lucrative deal. Michigan is desperate. They will give him a sweet deal. We basically own his rights if he chooses to come out this year. I think he comes out if they give Harbaugh the deed to Stanford University.

I am still waiting for you to give me a list of Luck's flaws, reasons he is not the best prospect coming out since Manning and possibly even Elway. You gave me a steroid-popping Offensive lineman (Mandarich), but nobody without baggage or concerns with their intelligence, abilities, or skill sets. QBs were inferred because their impact on a team is more celebrated or devastating. Still waiting. Just a list of Luck's areas of concern.

From what I understand they are going with experience, not youth. Harbaugh has HC experience, but on the college level. The way I see it, they want currently in NFL experience at the helm.

that is true of the GM spot they're talking about - I guess we can think that my reflect on their HC choice as well, but I'm not convinced.

Would make sense to bring in a seasoned GM if you plan to bring in a young, fiery HC who you don't want in charge of personnel.

Really? Do you have any reference to these past scenarios so I can check em out? I'm trying to hold out some hope here.....

king is a very good journalist who doesn't know a lot about football. he's very well connected and has somehow become an icon in the sport, though he's pretty much just a tool of the establishment now.

He's been away from the beat for so long that he doesn't have any actual sources, and teams like to use him just to put messages out there.

basically he doesn't report a single thing that someone didn't want to be reported.

I don't have any strong link to that, it's just sorta what i know.

    • These are the three deep throw attempts that Will Levis made in week 12. His first one is a beauty; Levis and Westbrook-Ikhine gets the safety to bite on a deep dig only to go over the top for the score. His second throw is another beauty: a crosser to Calvin Ridley reminiscent of Bryce to XL (though Ridley has noticeably more separation on his route). His third and final deep shot was an incompletion from his own endzone on 3rd & 14 with pressure coming down on him (to me, this seems like a solid throw).   Film Room Playlist NFL Pro-02.mp4 Film Room Playlist NFL Pro-01.mp4 Film Room Playlist NFL Pro.mp4 Film Room Playlist NFL Pro-01.mp4 Levis took half of the deep shots that Young did. The differences are: Ridley had much better separation than XL, which is why his deep crosser turned into a 63yd play since he was able to scamper for another 15+ after the catch. Westbrook-Ikhine holds on to his TD pass. Bryce had to throw one away to preserve time for a field goal. Bryce had two more throws that were incomplete due to the WR Are we really holding the three WR errors and clock management decision against Bryce in order to say that Will was better throwing deep in week 12? That's not passing the eye test nor is it confirmed by the data.
    • If you go on the PUP list before the season starts, you are gone for the year. If you start the year on the PUP list then you can get off of it. Kind of semantics, but we are putting him on the PUP list now which is before week 1, that’s why people who come off of it aren’t really on the PUP list until week 1, hence you usually hear right before the season that they are “starting the year” on the PUP list. I think PUP list and IR may basically be the serve the same purpose now because you also sometimes hear that if a player is added to the IR before week 1 that they aren’t eligible to come off the IR list for the entire year. Now, everyone added to IR (post week 1) can come off after 4 (or more) games so the PUP list is meaningless since it’s 6 games and starts at week 1. Anyone added to PUP or IR in the preseason is gone for the year.
    • I saw Brooks maybe a few weeks ago, he was walking pretty normally. of course he wasnt running, jumping and cutting.
