Andrew Luck Question #3289

Recommended Posts

I know if Luck declares we can try to start getting a contract done before the draft and even have him signed but are the Panthers allowed to contact him right now to try to influence him to declare or is that tampering?

Sorry if this has been asked but I am not going through every Luck thread.

As JR so plainly, succinctly, adamantly and unequivocally stated during the presser, there will be no contract negotiations until the new CBA is in place.

The official drop dead date for the current CBA is March 1. The draft takes place well after than in late April. Without a bargaining agreement in place how does one negotiate a contract?

The short answer is no.

I feel like if nothing else it would violate some NCAA rule that could get him in trouble if he does decide to come back, and I'm sure there is some NFL policy against it. I would also be wary of trying to get a contract worked up now anything could happen between now and draft day and it's just too risky.

1. Luck has until January 14 to declare.

2. He cannot be contacted until he declares.

3. Unlike the NBA, once you declare, there's no going back.

4. Like I stated above, the Panthers will not negotiate until a new CBA is in place, from JR's mouth directly.

Therefore, when Luck is drafted, there will be no contract in place because the CBA, which governs contract negotiations and conditions, will no longer exists after March 1.

15th not 14th and yes you have till the 18th to change your mind. I was not talking only about money but have Morrison or Hurney call tell them about the organization and why he would like it here.

    • That's a very incorrect statement right off the bat, coaches get fired for winning ugly all the time.  Every coach of a playoff team that then gets fired, got fired because they won ugly and didn't improve their players enough to win in the postseason. Guys like Andy Reid have been fired for "winning ugly" like you said, because they kept winning in spite of the improvement of their players. Also, "this is a fanbase starved for wins" is a statement I also don't agree with, I'm not "starved for wins", I'm "starved for a winning and contending franchise" which are two VERY different things. If the team and fans just want to win some games, then that's a loser mentality, sorry, but it is.  We should want to contend, not win a handful of games.  Every time this comes up I point back to the Lions the last 5 years or so.  They were losing games but improving every week while doing so a few years back.  THAT is how you improve as a franchise and move the needle towards contending, not winning games ugly.
    • Good lord. I don’t think I have ever seen a hole that open.
    • this is true.  But NFL Ss and defenses are actively taking that away and playing to take them away vs most teams.  The problem thus far in BY's career......is they are cheating and not respecting the deep game which makes the smaller/mid range game harder to pull off.  and Dallas is an anomaly game.  using those random games that run counter to vast work......doesn't really change the discussion/issues in Carolina.  Bryce Young took the shots this week because they were not just NFL open but college open.    Wide open dudes downfield that really were coverage busts/issues.
