Justify why Cam Newton isn't worth #1 overall?

that is bull....when i say win right now im not saying the superbowl in 2012, im talking about a Sam Bradford type year finishing around .500

And who says that Newton can't help us win 6 or 7 games. What is bull is deciding that you know how Newton would do in the NFL or that he would struggle more than a Mallett or Locker. All you have to go on is college success and right now Newton is playing for the national championship not Locker. I saw Mallett the other night and wasn't impressed.

with our D and running game you cant tell me there is not a qb in the draft that cant come in here and take us to around .500, i do know that there is no way in hell cam newton could do that for us

New coach, New Defense, New offense, what are you not getting here. Add to the fact the CBA could hinder coaching time and yep we are 6 win team.

Who are the fans here saying Cam is going to come in and we're going to be winners right away? I'm expecting a losing season with or without Cam. What I want ( I think we all want this) is a starting QB who is much better than Clausen and Moore. I'd love a big time FA QB to come in and lead this team. Is JR going to spend the money to buy one? I can't imagine anyone here thinks that he will. Do you want a cheap FA QB? I hope not. At this point I think our most realistic possibility is that we draft the best QB #1. If not, you have the combination of JR being cheap, and Hurney dumpster diving for a veteran QB. Cam looks great, but it's a huge gamble to select him. We're in the sh!tty position where we have to gamble. Don't want Cam? Great. Want Pickles? We've gotta find a starting QB or we're looking at something like 0-16 for 2011.

There is more than athletic ability to being a QB, there is the mental aspect, the ability to handle pressure, not just of a game but of a franchise, the mental aspect can doom QBs, the NFL is littered with them. Picking a QB who can pass muster in the NFL is no easy matter.

From where I sit, Newton is not a top half of the draft QB, he has more questions than answers, he exist in a run heavy offense where he has to read the actions of one defensive player to decide whether to keep or pitch the ball. Auburn has a very very good offensive system that Newton runs superbly. But last I looked that type of offense doesn't fly in the NFL. Could Cam be successful, yes, is he a gamble at #1 overall, heck yes, HUGE gamble. And judging a college QB purely on stats is lunacy and will guarantee to fail when drafting a QB more times than not.

your right neither of us know who will do what in the nfl, but i do know both mallett and locker are in pro systems and cam is in a spread system and is a run first qb

Quarterbacks who are drafted are all projects. The question is not if they will struggle but for how long. Anyone thinking that we will draft a guy and he will help us win right away doesn't understand football very well. Most guys even Peyton Manning struggled his first season.

yep even luck would be project whether people want to acknowledge this or not. gabbert & newton are next IMO in terms of potential . if neither does anything for our FO then we might have to draft for need or trade down & pick up more picks

Locker suffers from a poor arm and accuracy and Mallett suffers from poor accuracy and Footwork. Both are major issuers. They are what you call projects.

First off he doesn't run more than he throws so that is wrong right off the bat. Secondly he threw as many TDs as Luck did this year. Plus he ran for another 20. Third while there is some learning curve from the spread, Bradford who you noted ran a spread offense as well. What Newton has is the ability to be elusive and keep plays alive. Something that with our offensive line is extremely important. Also note he plaed against better cometition and more ranked teams than any other quarterback this year.

Mallett is sack waiting to happen in the pocket & his footwork is sloppy, Locker takes alot of chances with the ball, so neither are options IMO. it's either Gabbert,Newton,BPA, or trade down

Dont forget about Nick Fairley. Seems to be a good DT if you ask me. Dont know if he is BPA though. AJ Green is higher rated.

If Clausen is our QB for next season, then you go with Fairley imo. Why draft AJ Green when he won't touch the ball more than 5 yards from the los?

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
