JR upset with QB play, supports GM

"Jerry Richardson is unhappy with his team's offensive play, most specifically at quarterback. He thinks general manager Marty Hurney can solve those problems even if he's focusing on hiring a defensive-minded head coach."

Unless JR is smoking crack, lost it and plans on making Hurney a QB coach, that clearly means Hurney's going to find us a new QB or one hell of a QB coach. The question is did this come out before or after Luck decided to stay in school?

If it's after, then Cam Newton fans can keep the wagon rolling, that means he still has a chance.

Quick someone list some top QB coaches we can nab. Did they fire ours as well when they cleaned house?

I don't understand why 'all of a sudden' JR is unhappy with the teams offensive play. The Panthers offense has been horrible for at least 2-years, and Jake had some very stinky games in 2008. Why didn't he make a change earlier than now? Why did the fans have to sit through a horrible 2-14 season with the old regime, when he could have brought in new coaches last off-season along with the new/young players. The new coaches and new/young players (going youth) would have had this year to learn together. The Panthers may still have been 2-14, but at least they would have developed and be better prepared for the 2011 season (see the Tampa Bucs last year, compared to this year when they cleaned house, and went young).

To me, QB position is one of the Panthers biggest shortfalls over the last 2-3 years. When Jake went down in 2007 with Tommy John surgery, the Panthers were not prepared with a suitable replacment. Huge miss....Hurney would have made this. decision.

I say either pick a DT or a RG no need to get a QB when there are three or four potential QB already on staff matt moore was great when he had time a wr to get open to don't know about clasean or pike but AE he just got raw talent I think in wildcat he will be great becasue they can throw or run wich will make the panthers hard to stop pn so thats why we need to get a RG as the number one pick or a DT as the numbder one pick and then we go and sign D-WILL and CHARLSE JOHNSON and some other players to long term deals or maybe go and trade one of our Rookie QB name is PIKE and get a player or a fourth or six round pick and wish him the best becasue he will never see playing time while at carolina. or go after a good soild vet who can mentor our young inexperience QB. and I think Matt Moore will be back next season and will lead our team to the playoffs. There is just a few pieces to fall in place and this team good be great so I don't think that the PANTHERS need to do to much in FA get a few vets that can help us for a few yrs and we will be great I trust our FO to make the right decsion. and they have made two good decsion already letting FOX go and not going after HARBAUGH

becasue he has never coach in the nfl sure he has played in the nfl but there is alot of potential assisant out there and former coaches that could be gm or consaultants to teams in there search for a coach or to help the new coach out

"We're putting a very high priority on the offense and that can be accomplished without having an offensive head coach," Richardson said by phone. "We're also putting a very high priority on trying to get the absolute best person, whether it's a coordinator or individual, to coach the quarterbacks."

some people aren't reading what's right there in front of them.

richardson isn't interested in finding another QB, he's interested in finding someone who can teach QBs.

as already stated, the team's philosophy will remain the same. run heavy, stout defense...it's a play action offense that doesn't require an elite QB...just one that will minimize mistakes.

it's been tagged foxball, but it's a philosophy that's been established by richardson.

i honestly believe that Luck was never in play to be drafted by carolina. that's why i've always said carolina will take a dt with their first pick.

Based on this, I have a hard time believing we'll go into next season with Clausen pegged as our starting QB.

I think that Richardson has come to the same conclusion I have for a while now - Rip Scherer might have been a nice guy like Fox, but he sure the hell didnt get the best out of the talent he was given to work with. His qb's in fact regressed - starting with Delhomme and moving on to Moore and Clausen.

Im pretty positive about hearing this.

I just read your post. I agree except for the not drafting Luck thing. I think JR made it as clear as he could without naming names in his presser that we would take Luck if he was available.

What I don't get about this is why couldn't they make this decision prior to drafting the guy? Yeah, ok, JR we here what you are saying but it makes you look like you are poor talent evaluators. You guys were "Matty Ryan'ing" your pants to move up and draft this kid. Geeze. [Edit -- I would say the same thing applies to Coaching talent as well if indeed this connect the dots JR comments are directed at coaching and not the QB play. I believe though that Clausen and his pushing of the ball delivery (Bradshaw is right) is not suited for the NFL either.]

no he didn't.

the question itself may have been refering to luck, but his response is a matter of opinion...and fairly generic.

he was asked if they were looking for the number one pick to be the face of the franchise, his response was the number one pick should be a top flight player who could hopefully make the team better.

If he thinks that Moore, Clausen or a potential free agent (which will likely happen after the draft) are the answer at quarterback, then he might not find one in the draft. If on the other hand he wants to ensure our offense gets better right away then he will pick a quarterback in the draft as well as a great offensive coordinator to develop the rookie as well as Clausen and Moore (if he is resigned). I am betting we do what we have historically done in the past when we want to fix a problem. When we wanted to find a WR last year we brought in 3 as well as 2 QBs. Hurney will take a shotgun approach, bring in several guys and find at least one or two who can do the job. I suspect that once we find an OC, JR will work with him to develop a strategy and allow him to determine if he can work with Pickles or needs to find someone in the draft.

i want to agree with this, but i'm too afraid to. i didn't see anything that said for sure we would be making a change at QB, just that he wanted someone that could help make them better. jim zorn would be my first choice as either OC or QB coach/ass't head coach (for the title).

Since Luck backed out, we haven't had any indication that we would definitely change QB, but he has said since then he is unhappy with the QB position, and his commetns relating to it also imply he could still go after a young QB, either in FA (seems unlikely but possible) or in the draft.

The other possibility is we try to get back into the 2nd and get one of the more project-y QBs there... which could end up being Cam Newton if his chips fall right, though I think he'll go much higher. Locker is a more likely candidate there.

Baltimore ranked 23rd in offense this year and 20th in passing. Given they had Flacco passing to Boltin, Housmandzaheh, Mason, and Stallworth that is not exactly a ringing endorsement.
