Absent Parents in Disney Movies?

Why is it in Disney movies that the family always seems to be messed up? A single parent, other parent is dead, an orphan, whatever. It's Disney's calling card. I can't even name ONE movie where the main character had a normally functioning family besides Hercules, and they weren't even his real parents.

Here's a great list I found on Yahoo Answers (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080607052634AAwZKl5):

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (Absent parents, evil stepmother)

Pinocchio (No mother)

Dumbo (Absent Father)

Bambi (Mother killed in film)

Cinderella (Absent parents, evil stepmother. Prince, absent mother)

Peter Pan (Absent parents for Peter and Lost Boys...kinda the point!)

The Sword In The Stone (Absent parents)

The Jungle Book (Absent parents)

The Aristocats (Absent father)

The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh (Did Christopher Robin have parents?)

The Rescuers (Orphan girl, absent parents)

The Fox And The Hound (Mother dies)

The Great Mouse Detective (Absent mother)

Oliver & Company (Absent parents)

The Little Mermaid (Absent mother, Ariel. Absent parents, Eric)

The Rescuers Down Under (Absent father)

Beauty And The Beast (Absent mother)

Aladdin (Aladdin had absent parents, though his mom was originally in the story. Jasmine, absent mother)

The Lion King (Father dies)

Pocahontas (Absent mother)

The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (Mother, maybe both parents? die right at the beginning)

Tarzan (Dead parents)

Lilo And Stitch (Dead parents)

Treasure Planet (Absent parents)

Fox and the Hound (mother fox was killed)

A Goofy Movie (Max, PJ and Roxanne had an absent mother)

Pixar:

Toy Story, TS2 (Absent father)

A Bug's Life (Dot: absent father)

Finding Nemo (Dead mother)

I think in the more recent movies, it is the sign of the times. After all most of Disney's movies are aimed at kids. Buena Vista movies (Still Disney Studios) are aimed at adults.

some of the more ancient ones depend on the written fairy tales themselves. Pinnocio was made by a toy maker who always wanted a son. Gepeto, I don't remember if he was a widower or bachelor.

Also remember in the case of the old fairy tales, women often died during child birth. Or either parents just didn't live as long as people do now. (Unless you believe the Old Testament where people lived for 600-700 years!)

Disney also owns the film rights to all the follow on stories from "The Wizard of Oz" but has never done anything with them. Dorothy actually returns to Oz and encounter all new characters, including Pumpkin Head. Sorry, I strayed off of the subject.

Plus, you can't have a love story between 2 "people" if one of them is married. Disney is all about the "Happy Ending" and the "Lived Happily Ever After!" (Even thought it rarely happens in real if.)

    • I mean....no lies detected. See above. We have traded a fortune to draft a guy #1 overall that people have lowered standards for to the point that not playing like Jimmy Clausen and looking like a poor man's Kyle Allen occasionally is worthy of a contract extension making him one of the highest paid QB's in the league. That is cope on steroids.
    • summary: "let's talk about your draft, what did you think about Freeling" Dan:   guys with a huge upside, can come in and compete to start.  High ceiling "he does what for your offense?" Dan:   it's hard to find left tackles, guys that big and athletic.  We have Icky coming off an injury, we signed Walker, I believe your offensive line can never be too strong.  If we're going to win the game, it's gotta be up front on both sides of the ball, so we make a point of emphasis on making both sides of the front as strong as possible. "how many mocks did you see Monro falling to you." Not many times, left tackles are gonna go a lot earlier than when we took him.  We want to add the best player, in free agency or the draft"  that's our philosophy, to get the best players possible. "Hunter and Brazzell." Dan:  we followed the board.  Lee we felt very highly of him , super strong.  Brazzel so flexible and loose, can open the verticle.  Will Lee we held in high regard. "you take a look at your receiver room, Coker, my goodness, your offensive rookie of the year in Tet.  Lost Rico, but there is Jonathan Brooks. " Brooks coming off two knee injuries, he worked his way back, looking great, fully healthy, will help in pass and run game.  Icky, not sure when he's coming back but we're excited about both "plan on extending Bryce" we'll keep talking, will keep internally.  We believe in him, has such a great grasp of Canales and offense, has improved every year. "he's clearly come back from the benching, the arrow is trending up, where does he feel" Bryce knows where we stand with him, when and if a deal gets done, he knows we feel great with him, we'll get something done at the right time. "if this a prove it situation?" everyone in the building has to prove it, has to earn it. Tmac was everything we wanted, his work ethic, he's so big and talented, but he puts the work in, and is a great teammate. "your level of expectation, the building's level of expectation for 2026 "our goal is to win the division every year, we know we have to earn it.  we have to put the work in every day, proving it on the practice field, and our  guys know that." "schedule" we haven't opened at home in 2 or 3 years.  We love prime time games, hope we get some "
    • this one is gold:     Bryce has a cult inside the Panthers fanbase that has truly developed some NPC hivemind. I'll never understand how he's captured the true essence of the casual fan like that.
