Ron Rivera Interview 1/19/2011

9th time he'd interviewed... this was a good fit, good timing. Says he missed out on Pittsburgh because of still being in the playoffs. His first interview was the Rams... says all the previous interviews helped him get this one right. Says he's been ready for this for a while but this timing was perfect and the fit was right since we were after a defenses. says we were looking to rebuild our defense, our team. Announcer brings up the Rooney Rule... Rivera says the Rooney Rule helped him get experience in interviewing and got people focused on him and paying more attention to him, seems to think it's a good thing (sorry guys). Thinks that THIS situation though had to do more to do with what we knew about him and what he did this year than the Rooney Rule. Says he thinks the Rooney Rule is important to get the younger coaches out in front of people and get themselves opportunities and helps them prepare.

Ron Rivera says he'd take all the Chargers players with him if he could (said as a jest. don't think he hates our team =P). Says he plans to build "that chemistry" here. Says the young core of guys here is great, season didn't go as planned, but there are a lot of quality young men.

Rivera says the primary base of the defense will be 4-3, but they will implement elements of the 3-4. McDermott and he have already talked about elements of 3-4.

Chudzinski and he always knew there were opportunities and he said Chuds kinda thought he'd be asked to be involved (not said in a negative way). Norv called Rivera to say he thinks VERY highly of Chud and thinks the world of him, thinks he'll do VERY well here.

Says he has a better parking space at the Panthers place with a plaque saying "Head Coach."

One character trait from a coach in the past he hopes he brings: Norv's Poise, able to keep it going even in tough times, and Rivera hopes he can do the same.

Says strategy and things came from others Buddy Ryan and Mike Ditka, about being unpredictable, especially on defense. Show different things.

First overall pick is a scary proposition because you want to get it right. They're going to talk about it as a priority of need once all the staff are together. Says they need to sit down and talk about the priority of needs on offense and defense. Says there are guys that fit the bill on both sides.

Says first thing he did when he got the job was to give his wife a kiss, then put together his staff. Norv Turner thought about Brian Murphy (sounds like he got some advice there). He put together a staff he thinks is as good as it can get.

Encouraged that teams go from last to first and you have to be prepared to take advantage of that. But it's more important to SUSTAIN it, not just get there.

I think that is all of it.

He didn't give many specifics but listening to him does give reason for optimism.

I liked that he isn't locking into D with the #1.

Also liked that he said it was more important to sustain the winning, not just get to the top... that is nice, and a welcome change.

Seemed more relaxed than his presser, seemed personable.
