Cam Newton wants to be Big Ben

Recommended Posts

Again with this? Really? Ok, let me clear this up for some of you. For a person to have "Character concerns" they have to clearly be convicted of mistakes over and over. He made 1 (the laptop incident) that is legitimate and can't be argued against. The cheating on tests can't be brought up, because I am telling you that there isn't a SINGLE team in the COUNTRY where players don't cheat on tests, homework, etc. So, 1 incident, and the guy has character issues?

We're saying he has character concerns that teams will investigate, not that he has serious character issues that WILL impact him. Or at least, I'm not saying that... some are.

I don't know the guy. I haven't talked to him, his coaches, his teammates. All I go by is news reports... and from those you can tell NFL teams will be looking into his past quite a bit before drafting him. They may find that he has matured and it doesn't matter. I don't know. But to act like they won't even bother looking because he's been a motherf**king angel is ignorant.

Yes, one issue and you look into something. This may be hard to understand, but these teams are investing in these players... so they WILL investigate things.

Edit: Not that it matters much, but a poster here who goes to Auburn has spoken to him and has concerns about his maturity, heh.

That should put a cease to all his work ethic critics. I mean, a lot of people on here were sooooooo worried about him when it came to that. Glad to see him getting on his grind, and getting some extra work in.

It doesn't do a thing to cease the work ethic talks. Right now he's working hard to get his money, it's what he does after he gets his money that will cease the talks. Even JaMarcus worked out before the draft lol

Please tell me what character concerns does he have?

His father was the one who took the money.

He hasn't been in trouble since the laptop incident.

And if we are talking about 'Character concerns' what about Clausen's?

Drinking under the age

And having a fight in a bar.

Edit: Illegal transportation of Liquor

To be fair he didn't have a fight in a bar. He was with his parents for dinner and got sucker punched on his way out. Doesn't really equal character concern to me.

Also, transporting alcohol isn't the same level as what Cam has been accused of. Five years down the road he'll probably be stripped of his Heisman and NC, like Bush. They couldn't afford to lose the viewers for the NC game by suspending him, just like the Ohio State guys.

Edit: I can't believe I just defended Clausen, all in the pursuit of facts. Someone alert the media.

Agreed....Just about everyone who cites his character concerns admits that they were minor, and could prove to be nothing. However, they are there, and to pretend they aren't, or that they will have no affect on his draft status, simply isn't honest or realistic.

I see what you are saying. I was addressing more of the idiots who think he LACKS character. And I mean, if Newton is CLEARLY not a #1 pick because of character issues which teams will look into, the neither is Green (for his NCAA violation) nor Fairley (for his reputation as dirty). You see what I'm saying?

And maturity is all dependent on what you mean. Some call me immature because I like cracking jokes and having a good time. I don't think (at least, based off of what I see) he is "immature" in his handling of things. Again, could be wrong, and since your source seems pretty direct, I could very will be. Time will tell. But in 5 years, I would hate to be saying I told you so (not you, the huddle in general).

I understand what you are saying. I do not think character concerns will be the sole determining factor in where Cam Newton goes at all. I also think that there are character concerns about other top prospects, and I have reservations about Fairley having seen some of his hits. Haven't looked into Green enough to say other than hearing he sold a jersey and got suspended for it.

If he was as good as Big Ben I would take him in a heart-beat...too bad we don't know if he's gonna be that caliber player or if he is gonna suck. So too big of a risk, take Fairley.

Good thing the Steelers drafted Ben even though they didn't know he would be the caliber of player that he is now. The whole draft is a risk, always has been, always will be. Hell, Jimmy Clausen was supposed to not be a risk at all. He played in the same pro style offense in college that he did here and all the experts thought he would have an easy transition.
