Herschel Walker says he’s thinking about a comeback

Posted by Mike Florio on January 24, 2011, 10:58 PM EST

In a move that is either a publicity stunt or proof positive of the perils of concussions, 48-year-old former NFL running back Herschel Walker says that he’s thinking about returning to the field.

“I’ve told everyone that at 50 I might try football again to show people I can do that,” Walker said Monday in a conference call aimed at promoting an MMA event in which he’ll be participating, according to Franklin McNeill of ESPN.com. “I want to be the George Foreman of football, come back and do that one more time.”

Walker says he’s in better shape now than when he played in the NFL. “I’m a much better-conditioned athlete now than when I was playing football,” Walker said. “I’m 48 and in better shape now than I was when I was in my early 20s, playing football.”

And he already has his two teams selected.

“The two teams I would come back to play for are Minnesota or Atlanta,” Walker said. “It would probably be Atlanta because that’s home for me.”

This time around, the Vikings presumably could get Walker for slightly less than they gave up to secure his services 21-plus years ago.

Though he likely won’t be playing football any time soon, he’ll be engaging in his second MMA fight on Saturday night in California, 52 weeks after Walker made his debut — on the same night and in the same location that Jets coach Rex Ryan fired off a $50,000 middle finger to Dolphins fans.

I believe he could at least survive. If you have seen him recently he appears to be in very good shape and much more cut than when he was playing. So he has the muscle, it would come down to his quick moves screwing up joints while making cuts etc.

Still I don't see anyone jumping at the idea of letting a 50 year old take snaps. The risk/medical risk ($) are just too high.

48 year old Herschel Walker

Walker: "I'm in better shape now than I was in my 20s"

"Every nutritionist in the world has called me crazy. I eat one meal a day: salad and soup. I've been doing this for 20 years. "

"I ran a 4.38 40-yard dash in February. That's without any track work"

(Just in case you forgot) 2008

First link I came to

Walker suffers from dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as multiple personality disorder. His experiences are chronicled in his book, "Breaking Free," which is released this week.

I remember Jim Brown wanting to try this at near the same age. Nothing ever came of it. Megalomaniacs. Both of them. Why can't they buy a sports car and chase some young tail like all the other middle aged ex-jocks?

    • Yup. Hopefully  Brandon adds some muscle this off-season but he'll probably be resting his shoulder for a while so I doubt it. Miles should probably be replaced but I don't think we find a better 4th option to be honest. So is it better to add depth along side williams and Coby or try to upgrade the 4/5 . I think adding depth will probably be more beneficial than trying to upgrade starters and bank on Brandon and Kons continuing development. I really don't think they are going to make the playoffs unfortunately. I think the big hole they put themselves in has exhausted them. They've been amazing since January 1 but I think it's come at a cost and their legs are gone.
    • The issue is the predictability of it all in a Bryce Young led offense. In 4th down attempts the Jets were at 41 and we were at 40. And we were 4th in conversation %. We were 25th in the league in 3rd down conversion because we faced so many 3rd and longs in part due to playcalling on 1st and 2nd down but more largely due to the limitations that cannot be overcome.  And people want us to spend another 1st rounder on WR as if it is going to magically give Bryce physical talent he will never possess. It's a shame we cut off our own nose just to put ourselves in this frustrating predicament.
