Panthers begin background work on Fairley

MOBILE, Ala. – The Panthers have begun the vetting process on Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley, his high school coach said Tuesday.

Williamson coach Bobby Parrish said Panthers college scout Jeff Beathard called him recently to ask background questions about Fairley. Parrish said other teams, including Oakland, have sent him questionnaires about Fairley, but the Panthers are the first team to call.

It's a procedural move by the Panthers, and one they likely have done with other top-rated prospects, as well. But it suggests the team is serious about taking the junior with the top pick in the April draft.

“I get the impression that they really like what they see,” Parrish said. “You never know because you don't know what their needs are. But they definitely think he's a good ballplayer.”

They will probably get a start on the rest of the guys they will look at in a coming weeks.

what a dumbass quote. I sure the Panthers are going to do checks on quite a few players. At this time they have to prepare to pick ANYWHERE in the first round.

We have a clear need at DT, and he is the best DT available in the draft. Not a sexy pick, but the moment Luck decided not to declare, we lost our chance of being sexy. I would still like to think that AJ Green is a possiblitly, but he looks like he lacks the bulk needed to get off the line at the pro level, he might be a project.

I fully expect this guy to be our pick unless something unexpected comes up in the pre-draft process.

Yup, the big play ability is there. The only things that could possibly stand in the way of Fairley being the number one overall pick to us are:

-Charactrer/background doesn't check out well

-Bad combine workout and/or interview

-Some sort of injury between now and the draft

Outside of those 3 scenarios, Fairley's already a Panther.

    • Carolina Panthers rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan is putting the league on notice early into his NFL career, and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is well aware.  “I think he’s a stud,” Shanahan told reporters Thursday. “He’s going to be one of the best receivers in this league sooner than later. He’s got all the skill sets to do it, and I think he’s just getting started.”  Through 11 games played, McMillan has racked up 748 receiving yards on 54 receptions. He ranks sixth in the NFL in receiving yards and leads all rookies in the category.  Carolina selected McMillan as the No. 8 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. San Francisco had the 11th overall pick.  Did the receiver out of Arizona catch Shanahan’s eye in draft preparation?  “Yeah, big time,” Shanahan said.  Shanahan also said that he thought the receiver would be taken well ahead of the 49ers’ draft position, but the team did their due diligence when scouting the best overall draft picks in the 2025 class. With McMillan off the board, San Francisco ended up selecting defensive end Mykel Williams with the 11th pick to bolster its defensive line. https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/kyle-shanahan-tetairoa-mcmillan/1893558/
    • Koochie is playing his best hockey yet so far but it’s a small sample size
    • In basically every win but Atlanta he's had 2-3 plays that were a big deal but he also was part of why we needed those 2-3 plays instead of just cruising.
