So does hiring of Fred Graves have a ripple effect on draft day?

so we should put DT on the back burner and make a luxury pick for a WR when we have three competent guys at receiver?

look, if we picked AJ Green I'd be fine with it. I think Green is going to be a great receiver. my biggest issue with that is we have absolutely no one at DT. if we get a good DT it will immediately make our entire defense better.

i do think we could find good DTs in FA this year. there is a really good class of them coming out. much better than what is coming out in the draft overall. DT can be addressed just as well or better in FA than in the draft.

that said, i would be fine with fairley, green, or peterson as our first pick. i just don't see WR as being a luxury position. we have huge question marks on all of our receivers.

Not necessarily, no one knows what FA holds with the CBA, or lack there of.

Fairley makes the most sense, he instantly improves our DL and our defense.

true. that pesky CBA is going to mess up a lot of stuff that teams do and will probably cause the draft picks to have more value then they should. people don't know what they are going to have available in FA so they will have to address things in the draft first.

i don't know if fairly makes the most sense, but i wouldn't have a problem with the pick. same with green or peterson.

i really have no problem with who we draft. I just will be laughing my ass off if we draft a QB because I'll be thinking of those that said we wouldn't.

Get out of my head today.... I really dont think its a big stretch at all for us to pick QB first. Newton,Gabbert,or even Mallete depending all on pro days and combine results.

I know it's bold, but it's also correct.

I won't say we won't get someone if they fall for a value pick, but QB will not be the first pick.

LOL well you seem sure of it. Im not so much till I see the combine. With the CBA up in the air and that making FA more complex this year I would say that makes it an even better chance.

Bold statement so far ahead of the draft. QB is our biggest need as of now. The rest rates far lower.
QB may be the biggest need, but there is no QB worth spending a first round pick on. only one i would consider would still be a huge risk (newton). gabbert, locker, mallet...none of them are worth a first rounder. i would rather not burn a perfectly good first round pick on a position of need in which the quality is crap.

i'm not ruling QB out, i just think it would be foolish to go that route considering the lack of talent in the draft this year.

I think Fairley is the #1 pick. It's very likely that he would instantly improve our defense...all he has to do is be an improvement over Nick Hayden and Ed Johnson and our defense gets better. That shouldn't be hard to do. And if he lives up to his potential he could be a real dominant presence.

Also, the idea that we can just "pick up a veteran DT in FA" and be fine is a myth. We need two starting DT's and additional depth. We are THAT bad at DT right now. Getting one guy in free agency isn't going to cut it. Nor do I think it's just "that easy" to fix the position through free agency. There is no CBA in place. There's no guarantee any of them will want to play for us. Some of the available DT's may be resigned. Banking on free agency when we have a potential stud staring us in the face at #1 would be a mistake.
