Our Panthers 2011

I was reading the article about Cam Newton being a possible first in the 2011 draft for us. Considering last years QB situation was atrocious, I just hope 2011-2012 does not turn into another “rebuilding” year for us.

I have always believed that coaches and staff maintain a level of insight that is not readily known to most of us. But if this is in fact the case, I am beginning to question my faith in this (however new) staff.

I hope I am wrong.

If we draft Cam Newton #1 overall, it will signal that this franchise is rebuilding more so than any other move we could possibly make.

Yes, it sure would. I don't think they are in that mindset. I keep hearing them saying that they can turn this around quickly. Cam Newton would be a two-year plan at best. Heck, any QB in this draft would.

A few disagreements:

Jason Williams: I think they like him--he played well until hurt.

McClain: Tough, scrappy CB. I think he could be gone, but not if Marshall leaves. I also think Pugh will become a CB.

I believe you are talking about Jamar Williams the LB we got for Chris Harris from Chicago. Jason Williams was only with us 5 weeks when he got hurt.

11/3 Jason Williams aquired off waivers

12/13 Jason William on IR torn left ACL

Even if you are talking Jason Williams at best he is borderline. I don't think a frontline player would be available 2/3rd of the way through the season on waivers. I don't think with the LBers we have there will be room for him on this team. MAYBE...BIG MAYBE Special teams.

I am really satisfied with Pugh, McClain and Stanford. Great pick-ups late in the season. I believe McClain might hang around.

BOLD ARE KEEPER ITALICS ARE POSSIBLE PLAIN GONE

IMO these are the folks that will have a job in 2011 for the Panthers providing there is a season and all of our Core Free Agents are signed.

I think because of the new staff very few beyond the starting line up will be locked in on this team.

Of the italics I think are gone is Robinson (bust) Brayton (no longer needed) Rosario or King but not both(if we dont bring in a FA). I believe Barnidge is more of the TE we are looking for providing he can improve his blocking. I also believe that if we use a 2 TE set, King is more of what we want than Rosario. If we bring in a Free Agent I wouldn't be surprised to see Rosario and King let go.

Charly Martin was having a good preseason and looked like he might make the team when he got injured. I think he has a better chance of staying just because he reminds me of Proehl (I said in preseason)

Moore or a Free Agent will be here. Pike I think should be given a little bit more opportunity to show what he can do. If he hasn't improved his arm strength then let him go.

I think the RB corp is by far the most set position. Dwill, Stewart, Goodson and Fiammeta make this a good unit add Sutton and it is set.

I like our defensive ends and I think Brayton will be cut loose. Keeping with the new tradition of letting the young blood play. I see some exciting times with Brown, Johnson, Hardy and Norwood with this new defensive scheme. Though Norwood is probably a tweener. Taylor is history.

I like Landri, Nesbitt and Hayden but I believe Johnson is our only set guy on the D-Line. IMO is why we will draft Fairley. We just really don't have much there. Only because of his motor do I think we keep Landri. Landri next to a beast like Fairley could really do well.

Linebacker is like our RB corp. I really think if we keep Davis we will be pretty set with our LBs.

DBs I like and hopefully Marshall will wise up and know he has a starting position on a team that is going to be good next year.

Pugh, Stanford and McClain from last years draft might really be steals. They will definitely provide depth.

I know many people have slammed Hurney for the picks he has made and some of the trades he has made have really bitten us in the A$$ but he has made up for it with some late round luck. Gettis, Stanford, Pugh and McClain all might end up being good steals for us.

I do hope we fill our needs with some midrange players like we used to. Many of them have panned out. Much better than the High Priced ones we had.

Though not the expert that many of you (hahahaha) This is how I see it playing out. I await your comments.

I pretty much agree, especially with the keepers. I usually don't dive too deep into the reserves until FA. With the CBA, who knows when that will be.

I think that one huge factor that people have to take into account here is that Hurney will be deciding who stays and goes from all acounts I have read. Richardson intimated that prior coaches made too many of the decisions on personnel and that the FO would make those decisions going forward. Given Hurney moved up to take Edwards he is going no where this year. The same goes for Clausen. I suspect that like in the past decisions will be a group decision but I think that Hurney will get the ultimate decision making power.

    • Tanking in the NFL isn’t really a thing and anybody wanting to bring the rigged lottery to the NFL has an ulterior motive.
    • I understand where you're coming from, but we need another safety IMHO. Other positions, especially on defense, dont have ideal depth, but to me at least S is the one position we can't stand pat at even when thinking about the future
    • 100%. Nick Scott was awful last year. Like, even for a franchise that hasn't historically invested in that position, it stood out for how awful it was. If he sees meaningful snaps at S again we're cooked.  Maybe he has value for ST, but I certainly hope we can upgrade. Jordan Fuller, who was by all accounts an Evero guy, was almost as bad. Xavier Woods was bad, but not complete garbage. Still did not want him back. Those 3 guys seriously may have been the worst S group in the NFL. And they all were brought in, especially Fuller, as good fits for this system. Everyone knocks the defensive line, and they deserve a lot of blame, too, but so, so many times our safeties inability to tackle let 4-5 yard runs turn into 10+. And it happened over and over and over again if you watch the film. Honestly, Demani Richardson was the only S by the end of the year I remember making positive plays. I have no issue with Richardson being in the mix and/or competing to be a starter, but we still need another S desperately IMHO who has actually played meaningful snaps in the NFL. The only caveat/excuse for our secondary was the fact our pass rush was nonexistent for large stretches last year. Maybe that helps with coverage, but I dont see how that makes any of these guys better at tackling.  I know it somewhat feels like piling on at this point, but I feel 100% confident in saying this was the worst tackling team in franchise history. The 70ish yard pass play we gave up to Jamarr Chase where he ran through and past everyone in the secondary has to be up there in terms of most embarrassing plays I've ever seen. I can't imagine how embarrassed Kuechly must have been watching from the booth... I think bringing back Evero was a mistake, but for a team that has had nothing but change over the past 5 years, I'm willing to see this through. I definitely think we added significantly to the floor of this defense with the additions we made. I dont think Evero has any further excuses if he cant field a unit that can at least somewhat hold their own. Fixing the safety play is going to be a big part of that.
