Kiper's Top Qbs

Anyone who has Locker ahead of Cam at this stage has no credibility. McShay was high on Locker last year and the beginning of this year. He is trying to save face but that list will change trust me.

Mayock has Locker at #2 as well, and I just don't get it. This kid was simply not an accurate passer in the games I saw, and the overall numbers show that he couldn't have been much better in the games I didn't see. This kid must have one hell of a great personality or something.

I think if Newton was a white guy and had no past at all, people would be putting him on the top of the boards. i dont want to start a race thing here but i think it has an affect. 1 bad move by a black guy in school and if he talks with slang, he is labled a thug in peoples mind. it seems to happen faster that way then if a dan connor gets in trouble.(which i think he did). im not saying this is all about race but it does play a part. I think newton has some flaws to overcome in his game, but less than Gabbert. i just was not impressed with Gabbert all. Maybe i just caught bad games, but he didnt standout as the next big thing when i watched the games. if im missing something then show me cause i would like to have a QB prospect that i think is worthy of our pick, but Gabbert is MEH? and Newton has a tarnished image.

If Newton were a white guy with no past at all, he'd be a more athletic The Golden Calf of Bristol, and he'd be in the exact same boat.

Nobody thought The Golden Calf of Bristol was worth the #1 overall pick last year either. Some didn't even put him in the first round.

The whole "it's only because he's black" thing is just stupid.

i can see that. thats a valid point, except hes bigger stronger and faster. but its close enough for me to agree with you.

People forget just how hotly debated The Golden Calf of Bristol was last offseason.

It wasn't like there was a lot of consensus on him. Some people were willing to take a chance, and a lot of the same arguments (Heisman winner, National Championship QB, "he's a winner", etc) that are being used now were used then as well.

Me? I said the same thing about The Golden Calf of Bristol as I'm saying about Newton, but the circumstances of the team have as much to do with it as the players themselves.

Gabbert is rated above Newton because he's more of a "traditional" QB. To me, he's got all the same risks associated with him than Cam does without a third of the potential.

Locker? Mallett? You have got to be kidding.

agreed, although people are making an exception with him. he's not "prototypical" NFL QB because he comes from the spread...which apparently doesn't matter as much if you are desperate for someone to fit that traditional QB mold.

i wouldn't even consider him safe, unless you think black so called "running" QB as the definition of safe and white wannabe pocket passers are the only safe options.

still think that is a BS made up qualifier used to keep nontradional QBs in peoples small little boxes as to what works/doesn't work/can't work in the NFL.

the league is changing. the game is changing. it's time people started realizing it.

I don't think anybody has forgotten how hotly The Golden Calf of Bristol was debated, unless they were living under a rock.

Anyway, I just have a gut feeling that anybody who passes on Newton is gonna regret it. He is not Vince Young or JaMarcus Russell. He is Cam Newton, and he has a completely different attitude and personality than either of those men, and he's physically better than both of them. Even the people who wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole, have to admit that people are drawn to this kid when they meet him in person. All you have to do is watch 30 seconds of one of his interviews and that becomes obvious. And just like our new coaching staff, he is saying and doing all the right things, so far.

i don't agree at all. people hold black QBs to a higher standard and expect them to be perfect and super traditional in every aspect while they will give white QBs a lot more leeway. may not want to admit it, but it's unfortunately true.

you put the white gabbert standing beside the black newton and you are going to automically assume that gabbert is the smarter QB with the higher football IQ. you look at newton and you are going to assume he can't be a pocket passer, ignoring the success and talent he has had as one in addition to his ability to run.

stereotypes accompany black and white QBs. people are blind and naive to ignore it.

    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
    • You can go back to the New York Knicks somehow getting Patrick Ewing.  I saw a story where they place the New York Knick card in the freezer right before the drawing.  It was simple.  Show everyone the cards are undetectable to the human eye.  All they had to do was grab the coldest card. IMO ever since Goodell took over the NFL it has been fishy.  Patriots winning the SB after 9/11, New Orleans after Katrina and Peyton Manning's going away gift against us. The terrible calls during that game were blatantly one sided.  New England should have been stripped of their first 3 SB when they were caught spying on the other team in their SB wins.  I think the evidence against the Patriots was so damning Goodell felt it could ruin football and they brushed it under the table.   In the 2004 SB, How did we go from practically no yards in the first Quarter to setting a record in the 3rd Qtr.  Dan Henning changes the game plan.  IMO probably the greatest half time adjustment of all time.
