Kalil Franchised

“I think we all three want to stay, and I think they want to keep all three of us,” Kalil said Tuesday afternoon. “I think right now, it’s a matter of once the CBA is resolved, nothing else can happen. But their actions tell us, and from talking to (general manager) Marty Hurney and Mr. Richardson (owner Jerry), as well as talking to those two guys, it’s clear.

“They want to try to keep the core guys together, especially the ones who have played well.”

“Yeah, I want to stay here,” Johnson said. “We’ll see what happens with the CBA, but this is where I want to be. I just like Charlotte, like what I’ve established here, and hopefully we can figure out a way to keep that going.”

Kalil said he’s talked to Williams recently, and hopes for a deal.

“I do think there’s an urgency on their part, they want to keep us all here,” Kalil said.

Sign DeAngelo. Trade Stewart for picks (oh wait...can't do that until CBA ugh).

Curses.

You're out of your mind. Denagelo is older than Stewart and, RB's don't last that long in the NFL. Trade Stewart and we're left with a aging RB and once he retires all we're left with is Goodson and Sutton? Oh hell no.

Now I think about it you really can't pay a 28 year old rb 9.5mil when you have 3 good back-ups as well.

We still better not lose him for nothing. Marty better get his head out of his ass and make a deal.

Head out of his ass? I think he's done a great job getting and keeping talent, Richardson's cost cutting move and the 30% rule were huge obstacles.

If you twisted my arm, I'd rather have CJ over Kalil. The reality is that we need to keep both players, and Dwill as well. In addition to keeping our best talent, we also need to add more talent via FA and the draft. Losing several of the most talented players on a team that went 2-14 is not a good option. The rubber will meet the road when other teams start making big offers to Dwill and CJ.

We're a 'build through the draft' franchise, so JR can't b!tch out when other teams want the players we drafted. The coaching staff and FO doesn't want to lose any of our talented players, but if JR implements a cheap budget, then we'll probably lose both Dwill and CJ to FA. Hoping and wishing that other teams won't come in and take our stars is pathetic. JR can tell those other teams to go f#ck off by paying our players what they're worth.

Now let's assume we have a winning team, loaded with talent, we're near the top league in spending, then we can shed some players who aren't worth the money. Who cares? We're at the bottom in spending, 2-14, you keep the best talent and add more in FA. The other option is to stay at the bottom in spending, let teams swoop in and take what they want, and hope for Luck in 2012. We'll find out JR's plan soon enough.

To those who think DeWill should have been franchised over Kalil or Johnson....you are crazy. The NFL does not value RBs very highly anymore, and Panthers have a suitable replacement in JStew. No reason to commit that much salary to the RB position.

If Johnson is not real-close to signing a long-term deal, then I believe the FO made a mistake. Stud DEs are probably the third most sought after position in the NFL behind franchise QBs and LTs. Just look at the franchise tag prices of each position as evidence.

Top centres are not nearly as valuable as top DEs in the NFL. To simply let a young DE stud to free agency seems like insanity. Teams use multiple high picks in the draft every year in the hopes of having someone turn out like Johnson, and most often they don't end up anywhere close.

QB pressure is one of the most influential aspects of the NFL, even moreso than OL protection, and if Johnson gets to free agency he will command a huge price and most likely get it. It would suck to have groomed and waited on a young DE for this many years and allow him to grow to then just allow him to leave like this.
