Every team has different needs of the backup QB.   On some teams a young hopeful makes sense and on others an old worn out dude makes sense.

We are a little more in the in-between IMO where you probably would prefer a Fields, Pickett, Howell type IMO.   So a young disappoint that you there is still some hail mary hope in.....given BY essentially was benched both seasons for performance (I know that's not the official line going into Seattle but I think most would agree he got a break and should of been benched later that year).

I know we want Bryce to be the week 17 guy all season this upcoming year.  But it's still in the reasonable thought process that the other dude could show back up.

A backup that isn't worth playing when they need it is just stupid. 2 years in a row Dalton has shown the adlbility ro be fun for 1 game and then he is washed. Thr fun game isn't great but it's fun at least. He is washed at this point and that fine for him. He had a good career.

I agree about the hail merry type for a number 2 by this point in our peocess. It doesn't even have anything to do with Bryce because he has his own thing and it's his 3rd year. It's just about wasting a valuable roster spot in a spot where healthy guys still miss time. It's just dumb when they aren't a rookie and it's a little suspect in year 2...which it certainly was last year after 1 game and the backup's body broke down again. It was a natural time to let Dalton go into retirement and they did the dumb thing IMO.

who should replace him then? Got any great names for us?

Replacing Dalton at 1-5 in 2 seasons isn't climbing the mount everest of roster management. Great isn't even in the conversation. Healthy and coachsble should have been with a QB 1 in his 3rd year.

Holy oxymoron.

In all seriousness, I wasn't being serious. I'm familiar with Renfrow enough from seeing him play at Clemson.

lol.  I 100% knew that,  I guess I failed in not making that reply even more comedically over the top.  I’ll try better in the future.

Not really. Just with you and mrcompletely11.

Even though CRA is not a big believer in the team currently, he at least engages in good faith debate regarding them. Trying to have a rational conversation with you where you don't crash out and start being dismissive is outright impossible, so triggering you with poo emojis and pointing out your Bryce hate is the most effort I'm willing to put in until you figure out how to be a person.😛

I believe we could in fact be the best and most fun to watch team of the entire Tepper era.   So I’ll give you that.  I just think we stay under .500.  Flirt with that line.

I do not think we have much room for injury though.  Really need a 17 game Hubbard season behind a largely healthy OL for that to happen though.  Still think the pass game is going to be on the weaker side given so much development with guys is in the works there so too much can't be placed on their shoulders.  100% has to be a complimentary O.

I'll add one more thought for you Icege

What could make me change my outlook? Think that will come down to the Panthers showing me something in preseason.  Not wins.  Not stats.  But I have long been a believer preseason can show you things about certain players, the team, etc (dates back to Matt Rhule era) and IMO has applied ever since.

Do they actually rep Bryce Young and not try to hide him this year? I feel that applied the past 2 seasons and drastically hurt him going into both seasons (that's on staff).  The young Cam Newton way was the way.  Take lumps in preseason.  Shake the rust off.  Get used to game speed again.  Not using the start of the actual season for your very young QB to find a groove.   They haven't repped him or rep him less than stud QBs.  I don't think either preseason the team was showing confidence in reality (only word) of what they had going into either of the last 2 seasons.

also, we need our young WRs doing the same.  They need the same reps.  Preseason games don't matter.  But they do.  They are real NFL reps vs people you don't see every day in real game environments.  They need lots of balls.  XL and Saunders combined for 2 catches all last preseason (XL at 0).    I get injury concerns and being overly cautious was part of that.  But those dudes still played.  Feel the staff did a poor job of working up our young guys in those moments leading into the season.  Get them catches.  Get them work.

If BY, XL, Tmac, Saunders are out there all preseason putting in real work going into this season and showing some confidence?   The players on O that will matter are?  I might change my view.  If it's just a bunch of not seeing Bryce, not seeing Tmac, not seeing XL, not seeing Saunders, etc.....and being told but it's totally going to be great week 1? Meh.

To everybody who wants some random “developmental” QB as a backup, consider that the coaches may like Dalton as a backup for reasons that have nothing to do with Bryce Young. I’m sure it’s helpful having multiple QBs in practice who can run the offense and know where the ball is supposed to go when. Time that coaches don’t have to spend developing another QB when we have basically a whole roster to develop is valuable time. I guarantee Dalton is more helpful to developing our 2nd team offense than some random 6th round pick. That’s guys like Jalen Coker who are benefiting.

I don't want a random developmental QB as a backup.  I want someone young who people thought would be a franchise type QB and failed at first, looking for a second shot at redeeming himself in most scenarios.  Pending not a rookie or I got Mahomes or something.

Bryce is a year 3 QB and sort of in no man's land.  Think he deserves real comp sitting on his heals.  A guy that believes he could take the job if the opportunity ever arose and be the guy.

    • From the article: (A)ccording to sources briefed on negotiations, ESPN and the NFL are inside the 5-yard line on another ground-breaking deal for ESPN to acquire NFL Media, the arm of the league that focuses on content and runs the NFL Network. The deal, though different from the way the league and the all-sports network deepened their ties in 1987, comes as ESPN makes its programming available in a direct-to-consumer product this fall. ESPN is hyping this upcoming iteration as “The Next Era,” at a price of $29.99 per month. While a contract between ESPN and the NFL is not signed, the two sides have been closing in on talks that first began four years ago, heated up a little more than a year and half ago and now are the closest they have ever been, with the league even informing its owners they may be needed for a vote on it early next month, as first reported by Sports Business Journal.
