2025 College Football Thread

I'm all for paying a coach big money. I just thought hiring an NFL lifer who is 73 years old and seems to clearly be going through some sort of late life crisis was a big mistake. All of that media attention is coming back to bite us in the ass in a big way now. It's still there, it's just focused on us being a complete clown show.

but if the Panthers hired Dabo next year, why would I need to give you a name of a better hire to call the bad Dabo hire, a bad hire?  It's the same thing.

and you can literally buy almost any player.  Heck UNC could of paid Air Noland that oddly went down to SC to improve their QB situation.

UNC is 30th in NIL budget, "buying any player" isn't realistic.

Dan Mullen I could get with.  Matt Entz is a complete unknown.

The one thing neither of those two would've done is have UNC football constantly on Sportscenter, Pat McAfee, 60 Minutes, etc. over the course of the spring and summer.  That isn't translating to wins, so it means nothing, but at the time the coverage was excellent PR and excitement for the program.

And now UNC is the utter laughingstock of all of those same programs that were "good for PR."

How do you think that is gonna work out for recruiting? How do you think BB is going to handle something that he has never had to in his life, negative recruiting?

Definitely swung and missed, so far.  Better than looking at strike 3, which is what Mack was for years.

Mack was the right hire at the time. Fedora drove us into the dumpster and Mack was a guy who had proven success at the college level including in Chapel Hill. I don't think folks were lining up to jump on the opportunity and we needed somebody to come in a stabilize us and bring some credibility. Mack checked all the boxes. It's just that he wanted to stay on past his expiration date. If he'd stepped aside going into Maye's final season giving us a chance to go big game hunting with a Heisman contender as bait we could be flying high right now and Mack would be celebrated as the guy who built the bridge to get us there.

Agree with this entire post.

My "looking at strike three" comment was referring to Mack's last few years where he was on cruise control.

That's the danger of getting guys close to retirement or should have already retired.

But then you turn around and hire an even less qualified and capable guy than him.

You're working off of old information. We were spending about $4M in NIL under Mack. We had to commit in Belichick's contract to spending the NIL max which is around $20M plus Belichick's $10M plus another $10M for the rest of the staff, another $1M to S&C staff and $5M for the football office staff. The issue is absolutely NOT lack of resources as badly as you want that to be true. We are absolutely spending our asses off and you're seeing what that bought us. Stop lying to yourself. People say you can just buy a team in the NIL era and in a lot of ways that's true, or... you can just buy yourself an organization of crony nepotism. We chose the latter. Hope Bill and company enjoy that $$$.

https://www.si.com/nfl/bill-belichick-unc-business-of-football#:~:text=And%2C perhaps most importantly%2C UNC,so before their Bowl games.

Of course, Belichick is not naive. He is aware of the new financial realities that he will have to deal with and, with the leverage he had coming there, required UNC to ante up to make his transition easier and more resourceful. In addition to his $10 million salary, Belichick can spend $10 million on his coaching staff, $1 million on strength and conditioning staff, and $5 million on office staff that includes his longtime colleague Michael Lombardi for the position of general manager. And, perhaps most importantly, UNC has agreed to seriously upgrade its NIL budget from $4 million to the maximum allowable under the new revenue sharing system coming, which will likely be around $20 million.

ACC looking like 3 teams in the playoff.  Miami win or lose next week probably wins out.  FSU with a much tougher schedule but clearly can get there.  Ga Tech almost certainly wins out until Georgia. Good stuff.  No reason to think Tech can’t beat Georgia either

    • I don’t think Frank thought he could make a huge throw unless life was perfect for him.   We have never seen BY really even attempt such either at any point in his career ……and even checkdown Teddy uncorked 50+ his one season here
    • I didn’t put a great deal of time into who I named because you just said to name people because the point is the point…..and Tepper sold that point to you and everyone else when they drafted him.  That he could do that.  He isn’t that. So what do you want? Only examples of it showing in their 3rd year or the point somehow doesn’t exist?  Lamar would have qualified by year 3.  McNabb did by year 3.  Lots of guys who did it at random points could have done it year 3 if that would have been the random year they were called to do it.   If you name any QB that is actually good you can find windows where they elevate players during down times on a roster.   That’s what I said and it’s true.  It’s so true…. that was the entire sales pitch for Bryce our stupid over investment into him.  Nothing to argue about.
    • There are tons of videos of analysts etc talking about how Bryce's footwork needs significant improvement (and it is pointed to as one reason why he looks weaker armed than he really is)
