D in the NFL right now is about making the O be perfect - asking them to methodically march the ball down the field. QBs like Mahomes just want to chuck it, which is why he's whined about it. 

This was a natural evolution from the change in making it easier and easier to pass. Defenses adjusted to force things underneath, being willing to give up the long methodical drives because there are more opportunities for mistakes by the O.
