Nick Scott may be doing better than thought.

From a statistical POV: He's ranked 68th out of 90 safeties.

From fan POV: Liability and probably the most complained about non-QB Panther on our roster.

Bottom line: He might not be as bad as most think but he's definitely a below average starter at safety. He knows the system and he's a positive at ST though, I can give him that.

Nick Scott has gotten his share of Huddle hate, but I came across this SI article by Zach Roberts when I was researching recently released Quandre Diggs, speculated to be a better option  (https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/11/07/breaking-titans-cut-former-three-time-pro-bowler-quandre-diggs-4-destinations-ranked/3/), but getting back to Nick Scott...

Now to be fair, the observation on Scott was before the Packers game, but the stats couldn't have changed that much, and may have gotten better.

"At some point during virtually every Carolina Panthers game, you have probably found yourself grumbling about Nick Scott. The much-maligned safety has seemingly been out of position a lot or has failed to make a play. The eye test has often let him down.

"But that's why stats are so helpful. Sometimes, the eye test, especially for fans, is unreliable. On occasion, advanced metrics help make sense of things and lend more clarity. In the case of Scott, they make him look like a much better safety than any of us would've guessed.

"In coverage, Scott has given up just 15 yards and an average of five yards per catch. That's the lowest among safeties, leading superstars like Julian Love, Talanoa Hafunga, Quandre Diggs, Kerby Joseph, Kyle Hamilton, and Minkah Fitzpatrick.

"In FI%, the safety leads all his counterparts once again at 40%. Brian Branch, Camren Kinchens, and Xavier McKinney are some notable names he leads. He's been pretty excellent in pass coverage, which is crucial for the Panthers."

For those wondering, "FI" means forced incompletions.

Now I'm way past trying to figure out why X links aren't embedding for me like they used to, but here you go:

Suffice it to say that Scott may not be as bad as some have led on.

I would love to know what these advanced stats are... Because whenever they throw at Nick Scott, it's a catch...

Maybe volume is saving him because we are more willing to give up underneath stuff than deep passes

Stats lie it's all about manipulation. Anyone who watches Scott understands that on most ANY other NFL team he doesn't start.

That's something the Panthers have done consistently over multiple coaches. Starting vets who suck over young guys who need reps to grow.

Nick Scott shouldn't be a starting Safety in the NFL

He's regularly the worst player on the field for either team and Ransom - a 4th round rookie - has consistently outplayed him.

Random is a far more sure tackler(statistically) and a significantly worse player in coverage in his limited snaps.

This is the unfortunate thing that some people on this forum don't get about Ransom.  I like him and believe he could eventually be a starting caliber Safety but his coverage would get picked apart heavily right now.  His coverage skills is the main thing holding him back which at his position is a BIG piece of what is asked for him to do. Scott sucks no question but Ransom is that much more of a liability which should be telling to people.

DM obv hit on Moehring on FA Safety signing so maybe this offseason he straightens out the other S spot.

Yeah, I think if people looked at his season of snaps on All 22 they wouldn't have such a rosy view. Not that he is atrocious but he needs a lot of polish in coverage.

    • That would be crazy especially to us because our pick took Williams. And all the other talent we provided for them.  Tbey were smart we were stupid.
    • If you look at almost every QB in a team with a winning record or consistently in the playoffs their QB averages over 200 ypg. Here are a few ypg averages for 2025: Daniel Jones: 267, that is with an amazing RB. Mahomes: 261, that was with a few games without some of his weapons Baker: 239, lost his best weapon and still is putting up numbers Penix: 232, Falcons are floundering and Penix ypg is still higher than Bryce's Allen: 229 Lawrence: 230 Bryce: 173 and he isn't anywhere close to these other QBs. I included two teams that are not that great and Lawrence is not that good and still is posting higher passing stats then Bryce. Bryce has got to get his passing stats higher if he wants to keep his job. I want to win a Super Bowl and a QB struggling to pass 150 yards a game will not cut it. No, the conservative playcalling is not because of the young receivers and o-line. It is because Canales knows he is limited with Bryce and has to work around him.  Bryce has struggled to pass ever since he entered the league and 3 years in it is obvious he will never be a QB that can be relied to win the game with his arm.
