Panthers have a Jalen Coker problem.

Teams would be interested in a sign and trade for him.

To flip this around, the panthers would then be in a position where they either get nothing from him and lose him in 2027 or trade him to recoup value.

or do the most panthers thing which is do a desperation extension after he’s held out for half the season and gotten fat.

Lose him in 2027? That’s not happening. He’s locked into an ERFA for 2026 and he’s a RFA in 2027. For $7M or so we tender him as a 1st rounder. Is anyone giving up their 1st for Coker after 1 more year with Young?

There’s no sitting out for two years. We can think about the extension after 2026 and we still take advantage of the RFA year and extend him beyond that.

Certainly. I believe Morgan even mentioned trying to get something worked out.

I don't anticipate it to be anything significant in terms of length or amount. There really isn't any precedent for that that I am aware of. IIRC, that Shaheed deal was considered quite large for an ERFA.

I would not be afraid to gamble on Coker and set a precedent in this situation. Nothing crazy, but something that would make him think twice before he made his final decision.

Highly doubt it's going to happen. For whatever reason, the Panthers seem hesitant to commit to Coker. There's been whispers about his conditioning leading to questions about how much work he's putting in and he should've leap frogged XL on the depth chart long before he did. That's not a guy you want to make a serious commitment to long-term. We're in a great situation right now with him. We can tender him at a pretty high level for not a ton of money and then he's an RFA after next season. We essentially control his rights for two more years with no need to make a serious commitment right now.

You are incorrect. RFA only kicks in after three years accrued service. If he held out in 2026 he’d only have two accrued seasons and would then become an unrestricted free agent and could sign anywhere.

thats very unlikely of course as the panthers would certainly trade him, but you fundamentally misunderstand the situation.

You’re right. Maybe Coker actually wants to make less next season than our 40 year old long snapper.

He’d get a much bigger number if he puts together a bigger year in 2026. He’s locked in right now and the only way he gets a bag is by proving himself. He’s got 800 yards in 2 years. He’s under contract with us for 2 more. Do you think his agent is telling him now’s the time to get an extension averaging 30-400-3TDs a year?

He was an UDFA, he’ll get what we offer and build up his stats so he can get a much bigger extension in a year or two instead of a crap extension locking him in cheap for 3-4 more years.

You’re right about the team not seeming to value him. I mean poo they let him hit waivers and were starting XL for most of the year.

maybe he laughed when Canales thought Torrey Lanez was someone from his younger days.

WTF? You think that he hold out and gets  unrestricted FA because he hasn’t accrued 3 seasons. What are you smoking? If he holds out in 2026, he’s likely an ERFA in 2027 and an RFA in 2028. Basically loses a whole year of pay.

Please point to any example of a guy holding out as an ERFA that got to skip RFA.

I mean unless the rules are lying to me.

Lol. I am pretty sure there has never been an ERFA hold out. It's a completely insane thought to even have.

Shaheed was a literal Pro Bowler and didn't do such.

If you sit out a year and don’t have 3 years accrued you are an ERFA again. It’s that simple. There’s no way there’s a loophole that you are an UFA after 2 years accrued and you skip RFA year when you have 3 accrued seasons.

UFA's are players with four or more accrued seasons and an expired contract per NFL rules.

Also, holding out means Coker does not accrue any more time, also per NFL rules.

He is indeed correct that he would be an ERFA. This is why you don't see hold outs. The rules literally don't allow it to work at all. It would be career poison.

Right because the CBA doesn’t have loopholes like that. It’s why people who sit out always come back to make sure the get the accrued year otherwise they are right back where they started.

An ERFA can’t afford to miss most of the year as they are trying to look good for an extension.
