Getting bumped down the draft order is a legit argument. I just don't think we would've passed up T-Mac of he was there because outside WR would have still been a big need and we were fully committed to trying to build around Bryce. As you should be when you go all in to trade up to #1 overall to draft a QB.

Yeah we traded up for a guy who, can never have too much invested in his support. The job is never finished. Some people want another WR in the 1st. Or a TE.

Yeah, and if we ever eventually decide to move on from Bryce at least the table should be set nicely for the next guy. Making life easier for your QB is never a bad plan.

McConkey is such a better player than XL that it isn't out of the question that he'd have improved us by 1 win last year, which would have dropped us to 10th or 11th in the draft.  If we fell to 11th behind SF, they probably take him as they were heavily rumored to want him.  2 more wins and we fall to 11th or 12th, if we are 12th behind both the 49ers and Cowboys, then he's 100% taken by one of them.

Even if he was on the board when we were on the clock, I'm not sure we're taking him over a defensive player given how bad the defense was last year.  Part of why he was always the pick for me was that we had no legitimate long term WR option at the time, having McConkey would have changed that.

If he would have gotten open against Philly at the end of the game, I believe he would make that catch. But a lot of McConkey's production can be contributed to the fact that he has a big arm QB with size. He catches a lot of passes over the middle. He is often thrown open when he doesn't have a ton of separation. Lastly, his coach doesn't have to limit the combination of patterns that the WR group can run because of the arm limitations of his QB. It's like I have said in regards to the Seattle game this year. Nobody is producing if the QB is only throwing for 54 yards.

If we move XL in a WR for WR trade I'd prefer to trade him for more of a classic slot WR. That's what this WR corps lacks. I like T-Mac and Coker on the outside. Now we need that shifty guy who can get open immediately and create separation in short areas.

I am open to a guy that can play on the outside, not just a slot guy, as both Coker and McMillan can be deadly in the slot as well as highly effective on the outside.

At the end of the day, our #3 wide receiver will have to be just that, #3.
Tmac and Coker both need to get their reps in to let them grow. No need to bring in someone who needs all the targets and isn't a security blanket or a first down mover. This is when a veteran receiver is valuable (Thielen) and won't need the spotlight.

I would look at free agency at veteran guys like

Christian Kirk (5.3 Million Market Value)
Tutu Atwell (2.6 Million Market Value)
Deandre Hopkins (1.4 Million Market Value)
Keenan Allen (6.8 Million Market Value)

Guys like Tyreek Hill, Mike Evan, Rasheed Shaheed, Wandale Robinson would command north of 15 million, which would be too much for a #3 receiver.
