between the lines of the shockey signing?

We signed Shockey because it was the last day we could do it and apparently Miami was interested in him as well. So we jumped before they did. I get the feeling that Richardson is one of the hardliners so while a deal will get done, I doubt he is pushing for it.

Yet they signed an older, beat up vet.

So you prefer the slow no YAC King, or the incomplete Rosario (shown flashes), or the 3rd stringer/special teamer Barnidge over Shockey?

This is a solid move, whoever we have at QB needs a TE who can catch in traffic, and work the middle of the field. None of the TE's on roster (pretty much stated by Ron Rivera in the nicest wasy possible "no TE by committee") can do that. Plus 1 Carolina FO.

There's a difference between re-signing our guys, who are all coming off their rookie deals, and signing a veteran "street" free agent like Shockey.

Our guys are affected by the 30% rule; players like Shockey are not. Therefore we can sign Shockey without having to follow the same rules that are preventing us from re-signing Kalil, Johnson, & Williams.

Or at least that's how I understand it to be. J.R. said we wouldn't "re-sign" any of our players until after a CBA is done. He never said anything about street free agents.

I wish we'd all stop reading between the lines, thinking things are smokescreens, reading too much into this, reading too much into that, banking on this, banking on that, debating over what one lame reporter said because another lame reporter said something else, etc. I think it's as simple as this: the FO are humans just like you and I. They thought they weren't going to sign anyone until the CBA was done. Then Shockey was sitting there and they said, hmm, I think we better get this guy before someone else does. SIMPLE as that.

It's the offseason...what else are we supposed to do?
