Gantt Mock Real Shocker

Darin Gantt of The Charlotte Observer taps Newton for the Panthers, Mike Klis of The Denver Post takes Texas A&M outside linebacker Von Miller for the Broncos and Mark Gaughan of The Buffalo News calls Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus for the Bills. Which means this is the most wide open top five draftnicks like Jerry Jones can remember. They say the talent teeming at the top is not only bountiful, but overflows into the rarest positions.

Gantt is hopping in his car Monday night and following Panthers head coach Ron Rivera to Auburn for Newton's Pro Day. "He must be going there for a reason," Gantt says. "I think they were so set on Andrew Luck coming out (of Stanford), they're not going to wait. They need a quarterback."

It was a media mock draft. And yes I was being sarcastic in the thread title :D

it's not really a shock to be honest. Gantt on twitter has been saying for quite a while he thinks Newton has a good chance of going #1.

I think people(read: Newton fans) are reading way too far into Rivera attending his pro day though. He will more than likely attend every top prospects pro day(Peterson, Dareus, etc). Also, what makes people think his main focus won't be on Fairley tomorrow(correct me if I'm wrong if he's said otherwise)?

how are they reading too much into it? Rivera's been talking about how the QB position is going to be upgraded. Hurney says QB is our biggest need. Rivera says we're drafting for need. Newton has a private meeting with JR. A Report comes out we're not interested in drafting a DT. Now Rivera is at Newton's pro day.

All of that just sounds like they're doing their due-diligence on one of the top prospects in the draft. and just FYI the Rams and several other teams brought in Clausen for workouts/interviews/etc before last years draft. Even though several of those teams needed a quarterback as bad as we did, they passed.

Where is the report that says we aren't interested in drafting a DT?

Rivera will attend SEVERAL pro days. All I'm saying is it's not that big of a deal that he's going to a pro day that will have TWO top 10 draft picks working out.

Rivera is not John Fox. I think people are making the mistake of reading him like he is. He told us we needed a tight end and what happened?! Seems very direct and straight forward to me.

IF Chud and Shula think they can coach him he is as good as picked.

Gantts went off the deep end. Fox used to go Pro days didnt draft every player they he saw. Also its a 2 for 1 visit since Fairly is in it

Gantt is the most connected person that covers the Panthers and has zero emotional investment in them outside of them basically paying his bills.

    • Considering you previously struggled to understand BTT despite it being explained in a video, write-up, and multiple replies, I get why this might be a little too complex for you. Happy to clarify again! Just let me know which part tripped you up this time. 😉
    • And, honestly, there's only so much you can attempt to do in the draft. And every draft pick is a roll of the dice. But that's where grabbing a ton of UDFAs, and targeting the best, makes a big difference. Sure, their individual chances of getting a hit here is less, but that shotgun pattern might just hit something.  Right now, we need bulk, partly to rebuild and partly to dilute the deep level of stank that has developed on this team in the last six years. If we're going to rebuild a culture built around culture, accountability and winning, then these UDFAs we bring in each season have to be the wash water that gets out that leftover dirt.  Canales seems to be a smart, culture-first, build up the good ones kind of guy. I like that and I hope he can keep it going here. But he was working against a locker room that had been taught to lose and taught to distrust or ignore coaches. He's got his work cut out for him, still. He does seem to have it moving in the right direction and that's something I was pretty amazed with by the end of last season.
    • The most telling sign, IMO, of a team on the upward swing is who we lost in the off-season. Who left that even saw the field? Woods, Clowney, Sanders, & Hekker. OK...no big deal. Clowney is the only 1 that I raised an eyebrow over and I get that it was a money decision. No need to pay him over $7M to take snaps from our draft picks when he was just OK last year.
