Patrick Peterson Meeting W/ Panthers Tonight

Yeah, I remember when they said that about Elway after his rookie year, when he threw for 47% and had a QB rating of 52.

And then Manning-both of them--etc.

So you disregard the impact the offensive line has on a QB's performance?

It's because rookies don't realize they have to get rid of the fugging ball.

The reason Peyton Manning rarely gets touched has little to do with his offensive line.

It is too easy to sell out the O-line when a QB sucks. Jimmy wasn't getting rid of the ball.

I will give Jimmy some credit though. It doesn't help when you are at 3rd and 9 and Davidson is still trying to run play action every time with a blitz flying right at him.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera had dinner Sunday night with CB Patrick Peterson from LSU, a potential No. 1 pick. Rivera also attended Peterson’s Pro Day workout on Monday.

Like all of Carolina’s potential No. 1 picks, Peterson said he will visit with the Panthers in Charlotte at a later date.

I disagree. Hes versitle enough to tie up a #1. Is what I meant, in a zone scheme 2 or 3 he will shut down his respected duty spot allowing us to float more defense to other areas or zones. What he gives us is a dangerous combo of Gamble and Peterson with Marshall and Munnnerlyn as nickle type players.

According to every scouting report I have read on him, they say that Peterson is a liability in the zone right now. That's not to say he can't improve, nor do I believe that he won't. But considering that the style we will be running is mostly a zone D, I don't think that, with a limited offseason, he will even be starting day 1.

PS: He gives us the best option to be an impact player right away, regardless of weather or not he gets thrown at. Period.

A) See above.

B) From "Zods OFFICIAL..."

CB is the last position you fill when building a defense. Just as WR is the last piece you put in when building an offense. Look at the last 5 drafts, of the CBs taken in the top of the first round.

2006 - Tye Hill

2007 - Darrelle Revis

2008 - Leodis McKelvin

2009 - Malcolm Jenkins

2010 - Joe Haden

The only one on that list that made a significant impact on his team, as a rookie, was Jenkins. Why? Because the Saints had already filled out the rest of their defense before drafting him.

You can even look at last year's draft alone. Joe Haden had a very negligible impact last year. The CB taken after him, Devin McCourty, went too the Pro Bowl. The difference, the Pats already had 10 other pieces in place on D.

I will be angy if we use the pick and don't trade. PP would be my first choice but I really want to hear " The panthers traded..." before anyone's name. SO I would be slightly disappointed but if they take Fairley over Darreus, Cam or Mallet I think I'll have a meltdown. Then again Cam will get two years to prepare.

what's the purpose of a blanket statement like this? you'd rather them trade the pick for crap

I really like Peterson as a player, but some scouts are complaining of his stiff hips and suggest that his eventual position is safety.

He could make an immediate impact on special teams and would be an upgrade over Marshall, stiff hips or no.

But I sure don't like the idea of using the first pick on someone that may very well end up as a safety. If we go defense, and I hope we don't, Dareus seems the better value.

Agreed 100%. Peterson will be one hell of a free safety, but I just don't think he'll ever be an elite CB in the NFL. If we do go defense, it needs to be Dareus.

I think PP can be an elite CB, but, IMO, it won't happen in a Jim Johnson defense. Put him in a 3-4 or another man to man D and I think he could be great. Zone D's tend to marginalize cover corners.
